It was a good find but I didn’t think much of it at the time

On October 10th of last year I was detecting a backyard permission in my neighborhood. This place is so close I can see it from my second story window. House built right around 1900, like a lot of the homes in my corner of Baltimore. I’d already been out there a few times now and had dug my share of silver dimes, all of which were either Mercs or Rosies, and mostly all in the same trashy, iron infested patch of the yard. After a few minutes I picked up a somewhat sketchy signal that was fluctuating between 21-53 on my Legend. Decided to dig it anyway, and ended up recovering an old square nail along with a Standling Liberty quarter. Sweet! More silver! A couple of targets later, and still in this same general area,I dug a war nickel (found 12 of them in this yard alone) and silver Washington quarter. All in all a good day.

First pic is my silver finds in hand for the day. Second two are also from Oct 10th and that was when the SLQ really caught my attention. I am not a coin guy, but do know it is rare to find an SLQ with a readable date. This was the third one I’d ever found and the only one with a readable date. Considered it a score and tucked it away in my finds box.

A couple of months ago, while rummaging through my finds box, I happened upon it again, and this time bothered to google the date. Holy shit! 1921 is a key date. Nice! I knew it was scratched and had a ding on the edge, but figured I’d post it to the r/coins Reddit and inquire about value.

As a detectorist and not a numinist, that was an interesting experience with multiple accusations of it being fake or me not being truthful about it being a detecting find. I ignored those comments and focused on the ones about how rare this coin is. Consensus seemed to be that it would grade somewhere between VF and XF. Last month I finally sent it in for grading (my first such experience) and went with ANACS because they don’t require a monthly membership and I am not a coin guy so odds of this happening again are pretty low.

Got it back late last week and she’s a beaut! Definitely my best and likely my most valuable find…. so far.

First 3 pics are from recovery day, 10/10/25, and the last 2 are from this morning.

Now to get back out there and find something better!

Looks like it fell right off the mint truck. Great coin. I always wonder how these grading companies certify a coin as cleaned. How did you clean this?

I didn’t clean it at all which is the funny part. Pretty sure light scratches are from the dirt. Ding on the rim was likely me during recovery. Knocked it with my digger.

Sweet stander! Amazing condition!!

Thanks! Hard to say for sure but likely somewhere between $400-$600. Doesn’t matter though as this is staying in my collection indefinitely!
Congratulations on a very nice coin!!

If you look online they're asking $600 to $900 for a coin with that grading, what they're actually selling for would have to be researched.
