Iron sort of "music note" shape with flattened ends.

Found at a site where I've turned up items a hundred years old and more, so probably has some age. Rusty iron, sort of like the classic music note shape (which is apparently a 'beamed eighth note" and the ends are flattened ovals. 19th century dental retainer?
