So, I got permission at a new site. It’s a church now, but in the mid-late 1800s there was a schoolhouse on the property. That structure is long gone, but the location has never been developed in any drastic way. The church itself is a considerable distance from where the schoolhouse once stood, and the only thing that stands out as a potential “disturbance” is a playground, but even that is away from where the school was originally located, so I had high hopes of finding some pretty good stuff.
I will admit, after three visits to the site, I was getting disappointed in what I was finding. Lots of clad (to be expected) and quite a few wheat pennies, of which most were from the 40s, 50s…and lots and lots and lots and lots of junk. I did find two wheats from the teens, so I knew that there was some “older" stuff in the area, but the overwhelming majority of stuff I was uncovering was junk, along with numerous modern coins.
Still, the two older wheats gave me hopes of finding something significant, so I headed back there again yesterday. I walked through an area where I had already detected a couple of times with no luck, but this time and kept getting a spotty signal that sounded promising. It was tricky to narrow it down, as it was surrounded by junk, but I kept seeing the nice tone intermittently mixed in with tones bouncing around from 12 and 13s all the way up into the upper 30s. I narrowed down the nice tone and started digging. I plopped out the plug and immediately saw the edge of what looked like a silver coin. I was hoping it would be an old quarter…maybe an S.L, or a Barber. Imagine my disappointment when it ended up being a 1912 Barber half dollar (
), a first for me!!
I think I’ll head back there a few more times.
