I imagine Winter in here slows down ?

I've been to the beach hundreds of times in my lifetime. Don't be silly. I've just never metal detected saltwater beaches. I even have a nice sand scoop that a friend gave me for my birthday, but have never used it. Just don't want to be the stereotypical old goat metal detectorist who's prowling beaches looking to grab bling that a tourist just dropped, all the while ogling the 18 year olds and secretly recording them. Gross!
I don't see any bikini clad woman hunting the beaches I hunt... To each their own Free... we choose hunting at the beaches over ticks and poison ivy... I dabble in the dirt but haven't gone on a real dirt hunt in a few years... I like beach hunting... its peaceful and serene.... and I laugh because I really have no clue why you bother posting about beach hunting... are you looking for a rise out of us? Maybe I'll start a thread about carrying guns... I know how you enjoy them

I guess that's not a bad description, but I'm not pretending. I AM digging up historical coins and relics from the 1700's. Something special about digging up a coin or relic that's 250 years old and lost by someone who died 200 years ago. To each his own, I guess.

ya gotta remember FBT : We don't have LC's and colonial coppers here (extremely rare). So we have no choice but to angle for modern jewelry, and ogle at beautiful women. I *do* chase reales and seateds, but .... the beach, after storms, is a sport & a fun unto-itself !

BTW : In storm erosion hunting (pouring rain, howling wind, etc...) there are no "girls in bikinis" on those days. You're think of dry-sand baywatch type-beaches-hunting in -the-summer. Hardcore beach hunters here *despise* dry sand hunting. And wait for mother nature to do all the work for us :)

TampaBayBrad was the one trying to get a rise out of us guys who live in the cooler temps. I just get tired of the Florida guys pulling this every winter. They want our sympathy when yet another hurricane wipes them out year after year, but then they like to make snarky comments as soon as winter arrives. There are good and bad things about every place in this country. Winter stinks, but so do hurricanes, tornadoes, mudslides, wildfires and earthquakes! We have a hurricane every once in awhile, but I've never had any property damage because of one. As for tornadoes, wildfires, mudslides and earthquakes, we don't have to worry about them, ever. That makes New England a great (and safe) place to live.
i don't mind winter.. I detect and plow when I have to, makes me wonder if we are going to get any snow this year after the mild winter we have had so far... I know its supposed to get cold for the next 10 days but they are not talking about snow...

I'm always telling the FL guys who complain about water being cold at 70 degrees making it unhuntable... they should try it when its in the low 30's its still huntable dressed properly...

My wife wants to move south... I told her have a good time :D... I like the 4 seasons and want no part of living where its summer and spring all the time...

While fresh drops are quite acceptable, I looked mostly for the old high K gold and silver coins at the beach. Whoever lost the gold and platinum I wear is long dead:lol: Going out chest deep in 33 degree water was a normal winter activity if everything on the land and sand was frozen solid/snowed over and I wanted to hunt...pain is what slowed me down, not the winter.

Yeah, winter is tough. In California, I could hunt year round... but here, it get so cold, I ache all over for days, break out in hives (It's calldd 'cold urticaria') and the ground is either too wet or too frozen.

I'm a beach hunter who only hunts the beaches during the cold months... it has no effect on my hunting... a lot of dirt hunters I know hunt the woods during winter... the leaves and other debris keeps the ground diggable for the most part.
I had a friend who move to CT near the shore. He said the warmer ocean water temperate moderated the weather keep the really cold temps at bay along the beach areas.

It can, but water can also freeze..... I have seen ice form on the bottom of the shallows and also I have pictures some where of the harbors and open water freezing over..

Unfortunately, my COPD doesn't like temperatures below 32° so even if it wasn't frozen I'm stuck indoors. I used to hunt my tot lots during the winter and did quite well. Man, I miss those days. Especially since I've got my new D2 I've only gotten to use it once.

I won't hunt when temps are below 32 either but I had frostbite when water hunting in 14 degree weather with 35mph winds... it was brutal, since the frostbite in my fingers I know when its too cold my fingers let me know....
