How bad is the trash in your park?

plenty of trash in most the parks i detect but i've found enough clad ,relics, silver ring ,old railroad switch lock etc..... to make it all worth it .....i've got one old ballfield though i might never return to unless i put my 4.5" sniper coil on since my grandpa and the boys did nothing but throw down beaver tail pull tabs and beer cans and called it playing ball

As you probably know, the lower the IF on the Legend, the more prone it is to iron falsing. In addition, the lower the IF, the much better chance at unmasking good stuff in iron, and hitting very deep coins that may otherwise be identified as iron.
Hey Dig,
When you say, lower IF, could I ask you to clarify something for me for my slow ways? I also have some very trashy areas so I study these threads over to find help.

The default IF setting is 8. That is basically what it was before they opened up the ability in the software updates to adj the filter/St and BC. If 8 is the original start point and setting, any thing below 8, IE: 7,5,3.. would be considered a lower setting? This should give a better target seperation in NF infested areas?

Thanks.

Keep picking CP.
Watching what all you guys do.

Hi DP,

Everything you said is correct. However, I don't want to be a stickler, but the IF isn't a function of "separation". IF is a function of "unmasking", and the Recovery speed is a function of "separation". Do you know what I mean by that?

Sounds good.

You may already know this, but M2 is ideal for ferrous unmasking, but not ideal for nonferrous unmasking.

I don't know how much nonferrous trash vs ferrous trash you have in that park, but the TIDs in the video show nonferrous trash (although you may have iron discriminated out). Anyway, M3 is notably better than M1 or M2 at unmasking in nonferrous trash, so you might want to give M3 a try if you haven't already.
Thank you for this thread CP.

Diggy,
So, if I have a sit where an old store was and found it full of tabs slaw and caps, your saying M3 should help pull the coins better?
I've pulled a few zincolns and such but not much. I'll go back and try M3. Any other suggestions.

I believe so.
If I'm hunting deep and slow, from my understanding, I use a lower number. If I'm hunting fast and shallow, I use high numbers.

With higher settings, I can go over two targets quickly that are very close together and get two distinct beeps. I know it can be done on lower numbers but you have to slow down and get use to the "longer" signal instead of the fast sharp beep of higher number settings.

I believe, if I understand correctly, that you can still get depth with higher numbers but I must adjust my swing speed accordingly.

Did I fail this test, or do I need to study more? Can you grade on a curve if it's to bad? Slow learner. 😊

Thanks.

Yes, if by "caps" you mean aluminum caps.

My others suggestions would be to go no higher than 4 on the IF, 5 on the recovery speed, and use the 9.5x6 coil.

Don't get me started on trashy parks! There's a park a couple of miles from my house that is so trashy that when I swing my coil, it sounds like a machine gun...ra-tat-tat-tat-tat. Much better using the discrimination mode, or simply notching stuff out!

You're doing fine and you have good questions.

I can't really answer what you asked, because you keep saying "higher" and "lower" numbers, but aren't specifying if you're referring to the IF or the recovery speed :). But, I'll try:

The IF refers to something like a nail with a coin on top of, or below the nail, or very close together from left to right. In other words, for all intents and purposes, no amount of changing the recovery speed will help in that scenario, because the detector always sees those targets as one target. The IF however, can filter out the ferrous signal, to allow the coin signal to come through.

The recovery speed refers to something like a nail with a coin to the left or right of it. In other words, for all intents and purposes, no amount of changing the IF will help in that scenario. The recovery speed however, can help separate those targets to get two ID's.

Sorry, I'll take the conversation private. I hijacked this thread.

Sorry CP, my apologies.

But to clarify, when I was saying higher or lower numbers, I was refreshing to recovery speed. 6+ being higher numbers and 5- as slower recovery speeds.

Thanks.

You're fine DP. I'm finding this thread quite informational myself.

Well, I can't speak for all of the parks around here but I went out to a new park today and literally found over 100 broken glass bottles, more caps, garbage, etc etc. An old timer approached me and told me it used to be a landfill....... pretty dang bad. I did squeak out a quarter and a bling ring....but it was horrible.
