OBN and you other tech guys.....looks like I cut the outer rubber on my 8" Tornado I use on my GT. I snagged it on something and did not notice until today. The wires inside are fine but I need to repair this and be waterproof. CDV I believe has access to some watertight shrink they used in the power plant but that would take cutting and re-soldering the wire to get the shrink tube on the wire. There might be an easier way so I am looking for help from anyone who has done this before.

The rubber is not cracking, it was cut by a hangup under the surf. I could use some kind of rubber sealant and rescue tape but I KNOW someone here has a better idea.

Any ideas how to fix this so it is water tight and for good? Wish I could rewire it back into the coil but I don't think they work that way.

I can tell you. That liquid electric tape I think they call it doesn't work. Tried it a couple times and all it's good for is making a mess. Little scary, but the coil wire used on the SEF and excellerater coils can split easy if it catches something sharp. Once it cuts it's all over but the crying. Hopefully the sleeve on a minelab coil wire is a little more sturdy:?:

It is my Tornado wire. The wires inside are perfect, no nicks or damage. I just need to reseal it so shallow water hunting does not allow water into the coil. I hear rescue tape is awesome. Maybe with some waterproof sealant under it is the answer. Must be others out there that have fixed this.

Yeah, hopefully the coil wire sleeve is a lot better than a Detech. You cut that, you can peel it like a Banana:shock:

I would wrap it tight with electrical tape first and then use whatever someone else might suggest. I know this is only a half answer but with it good and snug it should hold up better under the fix.

Looks like Rescue Tape might be the way to go. I am thinking some Permatex Rubber Sealant might be perfect. I can goop it up good then wrap with rescue tape. Should stay watertight without problem.

Thats what mine looked like on my Xcal. Yes i used EZ epoxy tape, same as rescue tape.... I also used some aqua seal before i put the tape on. I also put some of that liquid tape on it.... and you are right that stuff dont work. Liquid tape came off first time out... but the EZ tape is still there.

Thanks Dew, I think I am going to try the Permatex Black Rubber Sealer and rescue tape over it unless OBN has a better idea. I have used that stuff before on water pump gaskets and it is super sticky, stays flexible and is forever. After getting it under the rubber I will wrap with rescue tape. I have not used rescue tape but from what they say it bonds to itself making a water tight seal. Apparently you can wrap a radiator hose with it and it will seal permanently. Was yours due to age or from getting cut? I don't remember how this happened but I scrub my coil in shallow water and have hit obstructions. The coil is less than 2 years old.

About the same, I just did a quick hack on one of my connectors when I purchase a new sunray 5, I Aquaseal, dry over night, then rescue taped it...been about 4 hunts since and no problems. The Aquaseal is runny, but just get a good seal on all, and even a second coat would not hurt, then rescue tap that baby...it will be fine.

Thanks, I was waiting to hear from you. I know you have about seen it all. I think the Permatex is going to be better than Aquaseal. I have use that before and like you said, runny. The Permatex is like thick goop. It sticks well. I plan to push it under the splits and wrap with rescue before it is dry. You have to wear gloves using that sealer or it will take a week to come off your hands.

I think I will do the repair tomorrow and post photos of how it looks for future use. Might help someone out if it works well. So, I assume the rescue tape is that good? I think I remember you using some on PP switches too.

Remote PP handle, I use it on everyone, not only is it a water proofer but also very strong and good for mounting the Toggle along with the 2 part epoxy. The permatex is like a silicon? I remember using it on gaskets, been awhile and I am sure it will work...

Maybe ask that guy with the Jon boat with a screen door in the bottom? Heard he can open the door and see fish on the way to the bottom:laughing:

Use the waterproof heat shrink tubes they us on well pump wires if you can get it to fit over coupling. They are totally water proof and you can by where they sell well pumps... All sizes too. Just slide over area and use a heat gun to seal.

Would have to cut the cable to do that. NOT a good solution for a waterproof machine.

That's quite a rip. Try some coax tape and liquid coax sealant over that. Its sold at electronic supply stores that sell Ham radios and supplies. You can find this stuff on the internet too. Good luck.

It is a bit like silicon but more liquid rubber. It is really sticky and works well for car water pump gaskets. It gets firm but remains somewhat flexible and water tight. That is what I am going to use. I will get it under the cut parts leaving all the rubber and wrap with rescue. I think that is going to work well. I am guessing that there is no way to disconnect the wire from the coil is there? Looks like the coil is made around the wire. I am real lucky the wires are not damaged. That thing looks like it was cut with a razor but nothing inside is nicked. Luck.

I have repaired a couple for land hunters by replacing the cable, took me awhile to find the cable. You have to remove the heyco then cut into the coil some to repair.

That would be a great idea but I would have to either cut the wires and solder them or remove the plug at the machine and re-install it. Those well pump shrink tubes are perfect but I can't get it on the wire without doing what I mentioned. Great idea though, Thanks!
