Background,,,, been MD for over a year now,,,, have an old park that I hit when in town about 2 hours away. Have had good luck there with wheats and silver, pulled a 1912 Barber the other day. I had about and hour to kill so I jumped out of the car and thru a path to a spot that I had found a 1941 quarter. I remember it cuz it was between two very large Redwood trees and near the river and not all that deep. As I popped thru the bushes I see a group had set up a shin-dig at the pavilion about 50 yards away,,,, and then I notice quite a few of them walking around with MD and an older gent walking my way. Before he reached me I had figured it out,,,,, a local club was here having a ta-do. When the gent got close I stopped and smiled as I took off my HP,,,, he was pretty serious looking and asked if I was a club member,,,, I am hard of hearing and asked him to repeat what he said and he got a little short and asked if I was part of the club,,,,, I answered no I was not and confirmed that they were having a meet today. He told me yes and asked me to leave the area for the members to hunt. I was a little shocked at his attitude and just turned away and said "sorry to bother ya-all" and left.
So here is what I need to know,,,,,
-do clubs bury actual silver coins and good targets in local, public places for these kind of events?
-Are they well marked and able to retrieve the items when they are done for the day?
- I'm wondering if the quarter I found was a plant from them from another day and if so I feel cheated out of a "real" find. Am I being silly by not hunting in that area because of the panted items,,, for me I want to find actual historic dropped coins not planters !!!!
-should I stop worrying about plants and find what is there and just be happy to have silver in my pouch?
-am I being to sensitive about the fact that the gent started out jumping my butt about being there and not asking me to join the club, cuz to tell ya the truth I'm a little bummed about it,,,,,,,,,
rant over,,,,,,, happy hunting all :D

I am shocked he jumped on your case about being there... my club would have welcomed you with open arms and probably would have asked you to join the club because we do fun things like these seeded hunts together...

It is possible that the coin was planted from a previous hunt and was never found. Our club uses the same location each year for our seeded hunts and there are times when a coin or two slips away and isn't found as we keep track of what is planted in the ground and what is found once the hunt concludes.

Again, I am sorry he was a grump and am glad it wasn't our club you ran in to because I would have a talk with our members if that is how they treated a fellow detecting enthusiast!! On the bright side... silver is silver so head back to that spot again and see what those suckers missed!!

First just chillax!

Yes clubs have "seeded hunts" for silver and prize tokens.

The guy was a little overbearing, stuff happens. Just chalk it up to the learning experience and move on.

I went out 48-hours after a local gold prospecting club had an outing once, and cleaned up four "prize" gold nuggets that were not found. They were still in their plastic holders at about six-inches. I don't feel guilty about it at all.

.....Hmmm....I've had hunts for our club and have also planted coins to find as prizes....In all reality you have every right to hunt where you choose but if I had a person walk to one of our seeded hunt fields I'd speak to them about it and maybe convince them to join....Guess it would be a play it buy ear scenario to have the best outcome for us all....If I walked onto one and was approached I'd move to watch the hunt and try another spot myself....We are all out to promote the hobby......there are some a**holes at some clubs...
worse case I'd spray them with mace or get my two boy's to pester the s**t out of them while they hunted......

They had no right to ask you to leave unless they had "reserved" the location somehow , but you did the right thing. Just leave the area and not cause any problems , there are other places to go. Its pretty rude of the guy to treat you like that but no need to escalate the situation.

There must be a local club that plants dimes with gummed stars on them. I have found a lot of them in several different places the past couple of years. Sometimes it makes me wonder if they even have their detectors turned on. Last year I was following a trail of them and instead of the one inch reading that they had been buried at, I had a three inch dime reading. A Mercury dime. If the club didn't welcome you, you wouldn't have been happy with them anyway. They have already forgot what detecting is all about.

VERY WELL SAID Silver...

OZARKS... you and I are on the "same page" I would have just put my headphones back on and stuck the coil to the ground:laughing: Put a hand on me and I'll rip it from your socket, shove it up the back end, so far up you could pick your nose with it!!!

But, YES, you did do the right thing. I need "lessons" from people that know how to just walk away... I had a traffic collision years back and the cop told me that I ran a red light... BIG DUDE mind you, and I just stood my ground. I told him, "okay then why the hell are those cars going by then..." another officer came along and basically told him to leave as I was making a fool of him. Some cops man... just think they know everything... that's scary. sorry to be "off subject", but the point was that I have every right to be where I am as long as it is public land UNLESS as one poster put it, they had some sort of "permission" to temp "claim" that part of the land???:?:

cliquish club!

Sorry to hear about the run in...if it was my club, I would have offered you to come hunt. If we had some cold drinks, I would have offered you a soda...and if we were grilling, you would have been offered a hotdog or hamburger. I've noticed some are real particular/selfish on people they hunt/hang out with...it's too bad in my opinion, especially if this was a club get together. I would have thought they would welcome new blood into their group. I've been real lucky here in Nebraska, while there are no "clubs" around here, I have met two really nice detecting partners who share their hunting spots with me. I've taken home a few nice older coins that they would have found, but they didn't care. To them it's not as if they missed out on a coin, but rather gained a friend. I guarantee if I hadn't met NebTrac on this forum, my detector (MXT) would be in the darkest place in my storage closet, and I would have given up on the hobby, because its not all about the finds with me either.

As for the quarter, IT would be one of my treasured md finds regardless if they planted it there or not. Think of it this way, would you feel the same way if it was placed on the ground a few years back as a find for an Easter egg hunt? To me a find is a find, regardless or where or who put/drop it their. BTW congrats on the quarter, I bet it made you smile!

HAhaha He wouldn't like me if he asked me to leave a public area.

BINGO! the fact he was with a club, dont give him the right to deny permission for anyone to hunt that area. I'd of had an issue with his attitude. I am overall a nice guy, but the attitude of those who I come in contact with, dictates my attitude in return.

I agree with this. 25, 50yrs??? It doesn't matter. You found it, those F'N idiots lost it. Simple as that!!!:lol: With me, it's NOT just about the finds. Although, if I was with someone and they had the luck in finding $1million dollars... first I'd beat them into submission with my detector, bury them in the hole they dug for "themselves", and move on. No really, I would have rather gained a friend. If they find something nice, then congrats to them. Anyways, HH \_ people

and to the A-hole... if you are on here... well, you already know that you would have OZARK and I to deal with:roll::yes: Why??? I gaurantee that you wouldn't want to be treated like that... funny when the tables are turned...! If I was in a club and had food I would have offered... Sad that these A-hole people exist. Animals do it just because, people are SUPPOSEDLY the more "intelligent" species and can reason why NOT to do this. UNBELIEVABLE:?::?::?:

sorry for the rant... can you tell I don't like A-holes:roll:

and NOW MADCLADDER is another "opponent" you would have to deal with if that was the case. HH \_

1,000,000$

LOL  Remind me to never go hunting with you...:D

I especially like the "bury them in the hole they dug for themselves..." really made me chuckle!

I can understand someone not wanting you to hunt an area that has just been seeded with silver coins, because in most cases the members pay an entry fee to hunt. That should have been explained to you in a very nice way. I'm sure that you would have understood and agreed to not hunt the seeded area.

The guy who you spoke with was most likely a jerk, that doesn't mean that the rest of the club members are jerks as well. You did the right thing by leaving.

Anyone who still insisted that they had a right to hunt the seeded area since it's a public area, after it has been nicely explained to them that they were having a seeded hunt, would be in my book, a big jerk.

You're right... a seeded area, but this man never said it was seeded...and doesn't own the park which we have every right to hunt as he does. So calling US a jerk is reaching.

I pay taxes to use the amenities in my town, and some guy who's a "club member" is a nobody to me.

Do I have a right to tell your kids they can't swim in the lake because I paid a guy to teach my son to swim in the lake that day? Or, do you still have as much right as me to let your kids get in the water at that beach? What gives me the right to tell you you can't use the beach because I spent money that day?

No one said they'd hunt the seeded areas, but that park is no more his than anyone elses, and like I said, I would still be there hunting...jerk or no jerk.

If that happened to me like it did the OP and it was explained to me "nicely" in that manner, then YES, I would have left and given them their "right" to be there. HH \_

interesting, but sad topic at the same time:no:

WOW... never thought of it that way. Good point. HH \_

although I don't know if I would "interrupt" a mexican futbol (a.k.a. soccer outing at the local schools here) and put a coil to the ground in the middle of the game to see if any of those chuckle heads lost something. NOT trying to be racist here people, just trying to explain that that is a VERY big thing where I live. Even the local community college gets "raided" from time to time. WHICH brings up a quick question, can I MD on a community college grounds or should I ask permission? More than likely they would say "NO" even though it MAYBE okay???
