I have my new Vortex. Made a test board of various nail, bolts, bottle caps and pull tabs. Got a bucket with compacted dirt to simulate about 6 inches of soil. From there, swung over each item one at a time with the bucket covering those items. Using the custom mode, I notched out each item as the VDI number appeared. Then put down on the board items like a clad penny, Indian head penny, Buffalo nickel, silver dime and a gold ring. Same test procedures and got the VDI numbers. So next was a hunt in a field. As I got a signal I was not sure of, I dug it up. If if was something like a tin can, I did not notch that out, but remembered the number. Quickly, I had the Vortex set up for that field to hunt. I did recover some clad change, but not pull tabs or old iron. This seems to work good so far. What do you think on this type of test?

Hi Taco.

You might be relying on numbers too much, especially when it comes to that gold ring you tested.

Gold jewelry can pretty much ID anywhere on the ID scale, but most of it will be in the low to mid conductor ID range. Right where almost all the junk is! Coins can vary on the ID depending on their orientation, depth, and wear.

If you want to only dig coins with very little trash, then dig the high conductor and nickel numbers only. If you want gold jewelry, ignore the high conductors and dig every other nonferrous signal. Be warned though, in park like environments it's not uncommon to have to dig up massive amounts of trash to even find one piece of gold jewerly.

Diga, I should have mentioned the gold ring was for testing only. I just want to notch out items I really wish not to dig. With the 400 and AT Pro I have used in the past, I might have dug some of those items only to discover a waste of time. I think Garrett has a great machine here. I hunt in old house and Civil War sites mostly, so notching out some of the thrashy items is a big plus. Appreciate your comments!!
