I have been lusting after this yard for years, its in an upscale part of town and very historic district where I have found coins from the early 1800's and actual civil war relic before. Very large lot, part of it you can clearly see a gulch where a stream that feeds a nearby river ran. Very tough to find anywhere to detect around here, almost all private property, and my big scores have been on street tearouts. Well I drive by hear periodically to see if there are any sidewalk tearouts or anything, and the house that sits on this lot unfortunately had a bad fire. Is a large brick house and the brick looks fine, but by the look of the scorch marks coming out of the windows, the inside must have been severely damaged, if not gutted.
There is a large roll off dumpster in part of the yard, the broken windows are boarded up, so it looks like they are going to rebuild it. Hope they do, very nice old house ,,, But you can see where I am going here. I have eyeballed this yard for years, just because I have a detectors eye, never thought I'd get a chance to detect it, but here it is.

Still private property obviously, but whether it gets rebuilt or demolished, the yard is going to take some damage, so I figure a few plugs are the least of their worries. No one is there of course, neighbors are minimal, so I am going to mosey on over there now and then and see what I can find. I arrived just around dusk so didn't have much time, found this well marked clip and an old metal jingle bell. Ground is nice and soft, didn't want to be seen with a shovel there so I just used a 5 in 1 painting tool to dig, which with I can quickly get down to 8" in this soil with minimal damage. I'm going to feel the property out slowly, may get bolder if I start finding stuff. The large front yard, which is what I really lust after, I am going to stay away from for a while because a pretty busy street runs along it, both cars and people walking dogs, ect. If someone with authority tells me to take a hike, have little choice but to hike. If its just a nosy neighbor I'll play dumb and try to sweet talk, of course they'll end up calling the cops, who probably won't have a choice but to tell me to leave and don't come back. If it get demo'ed thats another story, I'll hit it with a vengeance no matter what.

I suggest you make a diligent effort to contact the owner for a permission. This is an excellent opportune time to do so with a high percentage chance of a green light. Good luck and HH!

Yeah you should really ask permission instead of sneaking around on it. Chances are they won’t even care. Legal repercussions on your part aside, this kind of thing ruins other detectorists from getting permissions. Gives a bad name to the hobby. Not commendable at all, regardless of what is found.

I agree ideally permission would be great, lets think about the dynamics.

House is gutted by a fire. Assuming I could find his name from public records from having his address, how do I find him now ? I'm no sleuth and am not into tracking people down, maybe you guys are. So tell me, how do I find him ? He could be in a motel. He could be in a rental somewhere. Maybe living with family or friends ? You tell me, its your idea, talk is always much easier than deeds.

Should have figured this was coming but, Mr Jelly, you are seriously overthinking this. I am not giving anyone a bad name or ruining anything for anyone, thats ridiculous. This property is not even fenced in, it is about to be trashed by renovation or demo, and already has a large roll off dumpster on the premises. It is or will shortly be, for all practical purposes, a construction site. Probably you are squeamish about those too, street tearouts taboo ? If your house was gutted by fire, you'd seriously be worried about a guy digging a few small plugs in the yard ?
I do heavy construction for a living so I tend to respect barriers and do not enter signs, it will likely be cordoned off soon enough, and until it is, I am going to probe.

You must have been raised different than I or live in a much different area. You do something like this in my area and you are likely to end up with your ass kicked, minimum. What you are doing is trespassing on private property. You are taking advantage of a situation that has displaced a homeowner after a fire. If your house burnt and you found out some person was using the opportunity to sneak onto your property, you wouldn’t be upset? Put yourself in the owners situation, and then factor in the stress of being displaced from your home.

Not only is it illegal but more importantly it’s disrespectful, multiplied by the point that the owner is not there due to a fire. .

Street tear outs, curb strips, etc are a whole different situation. That is public property. You do those until asked/told not to. By your own words you are literally sneaking around to avoid people seeing what you are doing..on private property…because you know it’s wrong.

You are literally giving a bad name to the hobby. If that homeowner finds out and throws you off, as they should, do you think they will ever allow a detectorists around again? Absolutely they wouldn’t.

What you are doing is shameful, greedy, and very disrespectful of you in my view. I’d be ashamed to be posting and bragging about it.

How hard would it be to ask the construction crew working with the dumpster for the owners name and contact info? I could only see your point if there was clear public access to the property. Being a home I doubt this is the case.

Man, just find the owners, talk to the contractors like Tpmetal said, leave a business card, look them up by public tax records, whatever it takes. All the excuses you are making up to justify trespassing on the property would probably get you full permission to hunt it if you played your cards right. Also, you didn't think it would look weird someone running around at dusk around a house that just got burned? What if they suspect some kind of arson or insurance fraud? What if they've already dealt with thieves on the property? You really want to get caught up in that? Besides that, it's their property, you should respect it as you would your own. What would you do if you caught someone on your property?

You can probably get the owner information from the county government GIS website. They may have a layer in their digital map stack that presents the county ownership plat and you can usually query each tract to get the info. Alternatively, you might get it from the construction folks or the dumpster folks as others have suggested. I bet the owner had to pull a construction permit so the county building folks might have the permit contact info.
