The best way to ensure you will NOT get permission to hunt in a park is to call the city or county. If there are no signs saying you can't hunt I'd say go for it. The worst that will happen is you will be told you can't detect there and you need to leave. No one is going to arrest you unless you are belligerent or are destroying the place.

That does not apply to parks run by the National Park Service or State Parks. Most people say "federal" parks are off limits, but that really isn't true. It is mainly the ones the NPS run. The National Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management (which you don't have back east) allow detecting on much of their land.

Beg to differ. We do have BLM offices in the East. The office for the Southeast is in Jackson, Ms.

I am new at detecting here. Reading county park rules and regs there is wording that could be construde to include no digging or removal of park property. I have not spoken to any Rangers yet. I did hear of someone getting a $275 ticket for picking mushrooms at a local county park. Its tough all around. My plan and advice to you is get any permission granted in writing. Good luck and happy hunting to all of us. Matt

njal, i live in gloucester county. There are four county parks here. I was able to secure permission form the parks director. He sent me an email in case any rangers had a problem. He also notified all the rangers that i had permission to detect there on saturdays and sundays in the months of september and october. Some state parks you can hunt in as well but you must get permission and a permit before hand. Another good place to check out are the fish and wildlife areas all over the state. There is one in my town and i just need to get the guy on the phone to get a permit. Good luck...

3-13-14-sorry but this information is incorrect. I work at these parks and this is against the rules.

In County Parks I got permission from a County Security guy that patrols the park.
If rangerjimb4387 works for the state this is what he is probably referring to.

METAL DETECTING GUIDELINES All Monmouth County Park System Rules and Regulations ...

And I have a sneaking suspicion of why anyone there ^ ^ ever dreamed up the need to codify rules about metal detectors ^ ^ Care to take a guess why ?

And I had to chuckle with the rule : "... Digging may not exceed a depth of 6” (inches) ...."

Well, SURE !! And you know that a Monmouth County park employee follows you around, armed with a ruler. To make sure you and I don't exceed 6 inches. Right ? So if your pinpointer is screaming "silver" when you've reached 6 inches, and you haven't *quite* reached it yet, you'll *most certainly* cover your hole . And you'll skip that signal, right ?

Yep. Here's my personal favorite:

"(a) A person shall not abuse, mutilate, injure, destroy, move or remove any plant or animal or natural resource on lands and water under the jurisdiction or control of the State Park Service without having first obtained the permission of the Superintendent or designee."

So, apparently, I need a permit to swat that mosquito that's biting me in a NJ park.

As a friend once told me: locks and laws only exist to keep honest people honest.

Well, I dunno about "mosquito" qualifying as an "animal". But shucks, you "can't be too safe", eh ? You don't want to "break any laws", do you ? After all, you don't want to pay fines and go to a jail cell with Bubba, do you ? So you need to "seek clarification". You can't just "assume" that mosquitos aren't under the same prohibition. I mean, shucks, who better to ask than the powers-that-be themselves ? You don't want to give our hobby a black eye, do you ? Thus, hurry, go ask "Can I". It's your duty ! :friends:

“….injure…mutilate animals and plants…”???? Damn…I’d be banned due to proclivity for torturing small animals and wiping me arse with leaves after taking a dump in their woods!

..…I’d be banned due to proclivity for torturing small animals .........

Yes. We know you torture kittens, and club baby seals, and "alter/mutilate grass blades". Therefore you must stop metal detecting.

But not to worry, because : I will absolve your conscience of all guilt . Simply box up your metal detector, and all your ill-gotten-finds, and ship them to me. I will make sure they go through the right channels. No.... don't thank me. It's the least I can do for a fine fellow forumite like yourself !

Middlesex has a list of specific rules for detecting in county parks. Similar to NJ state parks.

And I have a sneaking suspicion of why Middlesex ever dreamed up the need to create and codify "specific rules for detecting". Care to take a guess ? And no it's not "because someone left holes" . And no it's not because of "durned those archies". Care to take a guess ?
