I was searching my fields where I found this clover pin this weekend. It is from an area where there was an Indian trading post in the early colonial times. It seems primitive, although I do not now its actual age. Just thought I would share it. If you have any idea on it's origins, please let me know. I also got an 1831 large cent, but I will post pictures later.

interesting little piece. trying to think outside of the box.. if the nails on the back were straight, does it seem like something that maybe was hammered into wood; like a keyhole? Obviously the center isnt key shaped, but maybe it protected a wood hole or was a guide to something. is the edge broken too or is that just the dirt on it?

I think your on the right track. Might have even been attached to leather, some type of small fancy guide. Some colonial stuff can be hard to ID, which is ironic considering they really didn't have a whole lot back then. Doug across the pond would probably know exactly what it is...

Belt/strap fitting, pointy bits on the back means of fitting to the strap/belt.

That's a fantastic recovery. Relics like this, which speak so intriguingly of times long past, are unique & special finds. Way to go!

Nice ID, too.

Thanks for the replies and info guys! It has been lots of fun searching this permission. There have been some very interesting items coming out of there and it continues to give up the goods!

They didn't have a lot of catalog makers, but remember so many people made things that may have never been sold outside of their town. I have so many little pieces that get no real id.

Its awesome whatever it is. It just says "I'm old". I like it.

I found another smaller version of the original! It is about half the size of the other. It was in the same general area as the other was found two weeks ago. The field keeps giving but has slowed down quite a bit. Still getting buttons and musket balls and an occasional coin, or in this case, half a coin.
