This is a question about civil war camps. I know camps that are used for some time will have pits they dug and thru there trash in. This would not be the case if they only camped there for a day? Does anyone know?

Interesting question. Maybe they just tossed items randomly because they were at a particular spot for a short period of time? We found civil war bottles and such laying on top of the ground in a known area that saw troop movement and short term camps.

I can't see them putting in the effort for an overnight camp.
If it was going to be a long term camp then they definitely would have.

It is an interesting question. IMO they would if the camp was semi-permanent, or permanent. However, if the troops didn't want to let on about troop movement, they may very well bury trash to hide the fact they had been there.

The didn’t want to divulge troop movements. They always buried their trash.

Glad Michigan was never involved with the Civil War !!! Although it would be nice digging artifacts, lol

even thought there were no CW battles in Michigan itself, it played a major role in supplying troops and hosting garrisons at locations like Fort Wayne in Detroit, Fort Mackinac, and Fort Wilkins.

Then there's that particular individual with major roles in both the Civil War and the western Indian Wars that has a lifetime of ties to your state.
