Brass Item I Feel Like I Should Know. Please Help.

This is not the first one I have found but I don't know or don't remember what it is. Help. It's solid brass and has no markings.

I'm just guessing, but I would say that's an internal part from a deadbolt lock.

Due to the wear factor, no internal parts would be made of brass.

Old lock mechanism sounds reasonable. I wonder if the the rest was iron, I never find the rest of the lock at least I don't recognize the rest of the lock.
