So maybe this belongs in the "How to use your metal detector" but I'll start here. This is a brainstorming session for you Deus II users.

A coworker approached me about a lost earring. It's a diamond earring with a gold post. I tested the other earring on the detector, and in 'gold field' and on a modified "Deep HC" program, I can hear the earring just fine. It shows about 25-30 on the vdi, and rings pretty consistently at 1-2 inches from the coil. So that's the good news.

Here comes the bad news, and where the very difficult challenge comes in.

The earring was lost on an indoor turf field. And as you can assume, underneath that turf soccer field is concrete with Rebar / wire reinforcement. I visited the field yesterday and did a bunch of testing with the detector and the other earring. At first it was just awful. I got nothing but rebar screaming in my ears. But then I had an idea. (Image for reference, this isn't my detector):

Since the earring rings at 25-30, and the rebar was singing the song of sirens at 60-80, I decided to try adjusting the volume for every tone category down to 5 or lower except about 20-35 which stayed at 10. This seemed to work really great. If I waved the earring over the coil, I could hear it clearly, and if I waved the coil over all of the rebar, it was very quiet. Seems like a great idea.

But, when I put the earring on the turf and swing, the detector is having a really hard time separating the earring from everything underneath it. So this leads me to the point of my post:

Where I need your help:

What advice do you Deus II experts have for additional adjustments to help separate the earring from the rebar underneath it? Do you think this is even feasible?

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any ideas!

Todd

Try dropping your sensitivity way down. Also increase reactivity a little. Dropping sensitivity will hopefully lesson what the Deus 2 picks up from the rebar because its deeper- increasing reactivity will give you better seperation if you are still getting the rebar. Play with those two settings until you get a combination of one or both that works.

I'll have to give that a try. I'm a little concerned that dropping sensitivity will cause it to not pick up the tiny earring post. When you say "Way Down" what is that to you? 90, 80, 70?

Thanks for the ideas!

You'll have to adjust the sensitivity until it works the best using the other earring on the turf. I assume the lost earring is very shallow in the (short) turf.

Lower your sensitivity to were you only here the earring and you might just find it, you won’t here the rebar. It called layers try it when someone just drops it you don’t need all that power to find it and yes own 2 Deus2 and that new coil HF2 89hz can better at finding earrings. Florida/Indiana.

You are right on the idea. Did not see your post.

If a fresh lost earring, then if you scrub the ground, you should get a double sound on it. I have found earring backs in artificial turf tot lots by scrubbing the turf, and it will double on top items.

I don't have a Deus but thinking outside the box for a minute, if you'd indulge me... when I do a search, the first thing I realize if it's a recent drop is that it can't be very deep so I start at 25% sensitivity on either my 'Nox or (especially) my CTX3030 and use my 6 inch coil on both machines. Also I disc out anything not my target with a little leeway all around the target "numbers" on the 'Nox and the 3030 has 1750 points of disc so I play with it a bit more. If these settings don't yield positive results I start to open things up a little bit at a time. BUT... I also don't undertake searches of areas bigger than about 400 square feet (20x20). Of course over concrete and rebar is a new one for me. Hope they have a small area for you to search. GOOD LUCK and please report back with the results!
