how small is that? if it's tiny, the only thing coming to mind is like an old cast iron table game or something. i feel like it's something i have seen on a restoration channel
 
At first, I thought it may be the end of a beam type cotton scale, but I've never seen one like it. It appears that it was a pointer that could slide over a rod and be set to indicate a position, but I don't know the purpose nor the significance of the number 5.
 
It looks like an old billiard scorekeeper that would hang on a cable over the table. You would slide the “beads” and the numbers, like above, to keep your score. However I can’t find one that uses a 5. It may be something like that though.
