The nickel isn't plated, the alloy in Wartime nickels was notorious for not mixing properly resulting in many of the coins having problems with flaking. For some reason some wartime nickels ring up differently than others. I've dug quite a few and most ring up in the same number as other nickels but a few ring up in the penny/dime area. Some of my wartime finds come out of the ground looking as good as the day they were lost while others come out all crusty and ugly.
