A single 46 Rosie kept the streak alive and I dug this war nickel, the weird thing is all 4 of my other war nickels hit 13 on the equinox .. this one hits solid 21 , even out of the ground ..it looks more silvery than my other 4 but if you look close at the second pic it clearly looks like it was just PLATED in 35% silver cuz the metal underneath is corroded .if it is only plated in 35% silver than why does it I'd higher than all my other war nickels ??
Is odd or what?

Also if it is just plated , it's not the 35% silver they are claimed to be

My only silver Nickel was in my change ? LOL, used to dig alot of nickels, but not so much since I changed detectors. ?
too_

Congrats on keeping the streak alive! The war nickels I dig always come out a bit crusty. Thats a nice one. Not sure why it rang up differently, was the nox in a different program?

I JUST dug one recently that did the same thing…in the ground! Solid 87 on the D2 which is slightly higher than zinc! WTH?? It had me looking around that hole looking for the other coin I was sure was in there…no coin. I have a feeling there’s more to the manufacturing of those things than we’ve been led to believe, they are ODD!

Nice digs! It's not odd, it's just the way of the War nickel...some, especially "S" mints in my experience...id or tone higher than usual. Doesn't matter if it's in dirt or the beach, it has happened with about every detector I've run.

What's weird is they are supposed to be 35% silver.. but the silver coating is peeling off as if it was just PLATED..and the metal under the "plating" is corroded as you can see.. I don't understand how this coin can be 35 % silver I'm considering sacrificing this and try to take off the "plating" and prove to the whole world that some war nickels are plated with 35% silver plating and have God knows what metal underneath. Lol
There is no way the thin coating can be equal to 35% of the metal composition of this coin

I'm thinking this coin AT BEST is PLATED with 35% silver comp.! Zoom in on the picture it clearly is plated, and the metal under the plating is DEFINITELY NOT silver

The one on the left is a 43-P, reads 64 on the D2…reasonable if not a touch high for a nickel. The one on the right is a Jefferson of some kind, the one I was talking about. I thought it was a war nickel because of the look of the edges but I can’t make out any letter above the dome, nor can I see a date on the front. It was found under a gravel driveway in a fairground where I found a TON of wheats and a couple Mercs, so I assumed it was from that time. REGARDLESS…the one on the right rings up at an 86!! I just retested both. They are both CLEARLY “peeling”. So there is something going on here.

Out of frustration I sanded the suspect nickel. Now I can see it is indeed an S mint mark, and it’s 1944. But it’s clearly acting as though the plating is coming off!

Congrats on the shiny and keeping the streak alive. That nickel is not plated, just a less than a correctly mix of the alloys. I have dug 5 or six of them. I actually posted on the oddity a year or so back. I thought mine was plated and maybe counterfeit. I have 2 war nickels so far this year, the first rang up 59-60 on the 900 (21-22 on 800 ) and the second a 27-28 (12-13 ). Its still silver, just a funky one. Good luck Mark To add all of mine have been the P mint variety. Not sure how to post the link for my post.

I have also had some war nickels ring up higher, I would suspect some might have had a higher percentage of copper in them. Only explanation I've got  it would make very little sense to plate a war nickel, that said, I believe what your seeing is copper oxidation. Just my opinion. Great start to the new year!

Can you see that the metal underneath is a completely DIFFERENT metal/composition/ NO SILVER?

I've gotten a few that rang up really high. I also believe it's just a random incorrect mix of alloys.

On a side note, the other day I dug a zinc penny that rang up in the 20s on the Manticore. Tested it on the D2 and got 63. Nickel range on both, which is really low for a non-deteriorated zincoln. Weird.
