A little late so I lost out.

I'm trying to find places to hunt in the new area I moved to. I found a school location that has been in use since the 1920s. The original school buildings were torn down in the 1980s, with the replacement school building constructed nearby (same general location). Using Google Maps for satellite images, I thought I found a great place to try as the area of the original buildings were now parking areas and fields. Great!

I went out there today, for the first time, and found they had recently begun "improving" the area with a new ballfield, bleachers, etc. The area was now closed-off with construction vehicles moving mounds if dirt everywhere. So for 20+ years nothing happens - until now. 😒Send over some cheese to go with my whine, please. So disappointed.

So I had to make do with another area away from the construction. I went off on some nearby dirt access roads and found trash (and one quarter). Had some great sounding targets that read 48-55 on the Legend I, but couldn't dig through the hard-packed mud/clay with my Hori knife digger. When I could get at similar targets, they turned out to be aluminum can bottoms or, curiously, the tops on chain-link fence posts. No idea why. A thunderstorm had me call-it a day, but I managed $1.41 in clad. Whoopie! I was using the small Legend coil for this, field setting on M2.

I'll probably try again some other day as I only got out on a small portion of the property.

If that were in my area, and "tractors were scraping/bull-dozing the turf off, then : There would already be 3 or 4 guys "on it". Ie.: That night when the workers have cut-out for the day. That's known as demolition phase hunting. Turf scrapes can be fund. Not many timid hunters where I'm at .

I went thru that very same scenario recently.

Another thing happening recently are schools and the fields near them being locked down due to break ins, vandalism etc. and having nothing to with metal detecting activities.

Sometimes new opportunities do come up where and when you least expect them.

Hang in there and good luck.

I had the same thoughts, but they have the construction area chained-off and gated. This is probably due to the "new" school and playing fields are in close proximity. I don't think I want to try for overt trespassing. 😵

I did try a small scrape pile (on the access road I hunted), but only found lots of trash. Perhaps a later visit will have more access.

Thank you, DocDirt.👍

In my immediate area, I have five counties within easy access (short and easy drives). Three counties are pretty lenient with school and park access. Two are harsh in regard to school access (Thou shall NOT tresspass when school is not in session or without written permission from the school district), with posted no trespassing signs around the perimeter of the schools. And we are not talking about high-crime areas either. But its what these two counties decided upon for whatever reason.

For a supposed freedom-loving State, Tennessee can certainly get its knickers in a knot for odd things.

Only two or three times have a scaled a fence or shimmied under it to hunt a construction scraped area. Have always found some really good stuff when I have. But neither times were their any signage saying keep out of no trespassing.

More common is seeing no trespassing signs and if so, a no go for me. I did ask at one such place and got a polite no from the worker.

It was shady enough when there were no signs, not going to when there are signs. Moon or no moon.

They’re someday going to tear up the ground near the train depot in town. I’m going to keep an eye on that to make sure Tom stays away or gives me my 50% royalties. Anyway, I know the main guy of the historical society heading it so will talk to him about it, let them display anything good found.

Long story short, good on you for getting out. That’s the hard part for me these days!

I guess it falls into the category of "Better to have high standards than no standards at all"
