This story starts with getting some cash for my trip to metal detect in back Montana with a visit to the local Credit Union. I bought a couple of rolls of half dollars there, as I enjoy spending them and always hope for something silver. First roll all clad, second roll, a nice bright white rim looking at me... turned out to be a 1963-D Ben Franklin half! Delighted with that. A good start!
Then off with my AT Pro to Montana to meet my friend Jason in Helena, he uses the Manticore. We started out the next morning going north to Great Falls, it has been detected a heck of a lot but we managed to find a few blocks and homes that produced 4 Merc dimes and a nice Sterling Silver ring for Jason. I ended up with a Silver Rosie, one Merc, 2 Sterling Rings and a Sterling frame gem holder, along with a Buffalo Nickel and Indian Head Cent for me. We both got a fair amount of wheat cents and a lot of clad. 6 Silver Coins and 4 Sterling Silvers for the day.
Back to Helena for the nite, then off to a nearby small town to try some curb strips and private yards. The day went really well for both of us. Lots of private front yard permissions, some curb strips too. Jason started off hot with 3 silvers from his side of the first yard, including a scarce "Board of Trade" Saloon token from near this small town. I struggled finding 12 wheat cents before my first silver, a Mercury Dime, then my friend cooled off for some hours while I did got hot... two Barber Dimes, Silver Rosies, 1942 Silver Washington, and Merc Dimes, along with a Silver War Nickel. I did get a "V" nickel and an Indian Head Cent. My friend came on strong at the end, adding 3 more Silvers, along with some cool advertising items and medallions. He also found a partially folded up Indian Head cent, first one of these I'd seen. I ended up with 8 Silvers, and my friend added 6 more.
We stayed in town that nite at a local ma & pa... clean quiet and comfortable! Once again, Jason started off well, with his first silver being a Queen Elizabeth Silver quarter from the curb, followed by a few Silver Dimes and a few cool advertising items. My first silver was a 1938 Washington Quarter from the curb, then it took me a while, but I got on board again with a Merc Dime. Jason added more silvers during the day, Silver Rosies and Mercs. Interesting that several yards had nothing in them at all. We split up later that afternoon to check out a couple of blocks, and I was blessed to wander into one of those dream yards. Not a big front yard, about 50' by 40' but it was loaded! My sequence of finds were wheat cent, wheat, wheat, Buffalo Nickel, wheat, Merc Dime, Silver Rosie, a few more wheats, 1934 Silver Washington Quarter, Silver War Nickel, a spill with Silver Canadian Quarter that had a Silver Rosie sitting on top of it, another Silver Rosie about 6" away from that spill, followed by a few more wheaties and 2 more Silver Rosies. NINE silvers in that small yard! One of those silvers was my 100th Silver coin for the year! I've had 10 silvers in half a yard in Eastern Montana (yard split up with detecting buddy), but this was really special, my 2nd best ever. Jason ended the day with a couple more Silver Dimes, I added another "V" nickel, a really neat Jockey Cap and Riding Crop pin, and a Silver War Nickel. Totals for us for the day were 19 silver coins and other cool stuff. As it grew evening, we headed back to Helena, and I headed out early Sunday morning to drive back to Idaho. Totals for the 2 1/2 days were 39 Silvers, 4 Sterling, 180+ wheat cents, and many other fun finds.
We were both very happy with our detecting, I was once again impressed with the Manticore, Jason had put on the 9" coil and really liked the performance and handling of the machine with that coil. I did well with the AT Pro as going on 8 years with this detector I really know it well, I like the tones and solid Target ID, but I can see that the Manticore has a couple more inches of depth performance which helped with a couple of targets that I could not pick up with the AT Pro. Pictures follow of many of our finds, my finds then Jason's finds, thank you for your interest!
