It was a windy day. Spent the day detecting around a shrubby 1860's foundation hole. Lots of spikes and nails. Was hoping to find more, but I'm happy to come away with two early IHPs in not too bad shape. In the final two photos I show the coins before I cleaned them with fingernails and wet Q-Tips. The metal disc appears to be a backing for a metal punch. I always see plenty of lead sinkers as many of my sites are right on the ocean bay. Usually I don't collect lead, only .75 and .69 balls. Going back out tomorrow, not sure where.

Do you ever get skunked? Nice IHPs, they are in great shape.

Thanks. I do get skunked. Usually the colonials I hunt are very stingy. The good finds and their memories keep me going. Also seeing what other people are posting here keeps me motivated.

My oldest maps are from 1838. Since most of the farms were rural and probably required 50 - 100 acres to survive, population density was low. If I stick to where my maps show a dwelling, my odds are higher. Last Sunday I was on a colonial dirtfishing expedition. Off in fields forested over and only found a single 1700s button. And many nails.
