Default Finally frozen out...

It had to happen I guess, I live in New England, the ground should've been frozen solid long before now...I was ready to keep going, too, but I don't have a jackhammer and compressor at hand... Don't think that would go over well at the park or school anyway, not even on the weekends...Sorry, I'm just bored, anyone else having this problem?

Default Not yet !

Last night and today is basically the end of casual private property grassy area hunting. Now it's woods (I hope) and shallow beaches.
Maybe 2 more weeks ? Looks like one for sure.

ya new hampshire is the same way, teetering on frozen, not frozen.

There is about an inch of frost in the ground in most locations.

I hunted the woods yesterday for 2 hours and found 3 dimes. and 1 shot gun shell head.

Winter's great for field hunts and woods. I always sort my Google Earth database by "winter" or "fair weather" hunting and switch modes back and forth.

The ground in Chicago is finally starting to freeze as well.
If you can break through the first inch or two of frozen ground,
the digging is easy after that.

Well for me the ground is frozen here at my level so Im lucky in that I can go off the mountain and find good ground to dig in. For me up here on the plateau I do recon on potential sites to hunt. Actually found 4 new sites on an old abandoned railway. Next week-end I go off the hill for some digging.

Is it possible to unfreeze before spring? We just had are freeze this week, but next week it will hit the mid to high 40's again. Can the ground unfreeze itself after a first freeze?

Its that darn canadian air coming down

Not usually, it all depends on night time temps. Granted some of the ground will thaw in the sun by late afternoon but if it is cold at night then it is frozen again. We have been in the 50s here during the day and the ground is still frozen.

Still lucky enough that there is no frozen ground really in my area. Actually pretty soft and easy to search. I was out earlier today.

Gonna be 59 this weekend. Ground is nice and moist. Easy to dig in. Nothing frozen here.

We are warming back up as the weekend approaches so I'm hopeful to get some time in this weekend. It's bound to end but I feel blessed to have been able to go this long in my first season.

Everything has been frozen solid for weeks here and I'm losing it. Finding myself doing a lot of research lately though. Found a few good spots in the woods to check out in the spring. Hope we have an early one this year. Could be as early as April. Only 90-100 days to go....I aint gonna make...

I will be checking some of my wooded spots today or tomorrow. As long as there is adequate leaf and scrub cover it may not freeze for 2-3 weeks after "regular" ground.
Good luck.

haha! it sure isn't from this part of Canada, eh.
almost every single storm system we get here tends to come up the coast from New England. i'm certainly not blaming you guys, i know it can't be helped, lol. it's just the way the upper winds blow things the clouds around.

but yeah, the ground here is like cement today, -21C windchill and then back up above freezing by the weekend.
as for the ground unfreezing (thawing), it's possible. look for higher ground, hills and such and anything facing south would be better yet. there'll be less water in ground in the higher places and more sun exposure. those high 40's temps might let you get out for some swinging.
one thing i try before i even think about going anywhere is to just go out in my back yard with my digging knife. where the grass is the shortest and the ground is much less insulated from the effects of frost, i'll try sticking my knife in the ground. if it goes in easily, then i'll go detecting. if i can't get the knife in the ground, then most likely almost every other area is going to be frozen too hard as well.

Pete

One of the few advantages to living in Florida I guess (a native Floridian). In the summer (9 months of the year) it is too hot and then there's the mosquitoes and roaches the size of VW's winter is the only time that is truly comfortable (although yesterday it only got into the low 50's, that's frigid here).

Just starting out myself, so looking forward to working out how the thing works and then start figuring out where to go looking. I am an information geek so I have already have a couple of android apps set up to track anything I might find, even if it ends up being pennies or old beer tabs!!

Sorry for the folks up north, I can only think that it makes looking forward to spring that much more pleasant (at least you have seasons).
