It keeps me from sitting in the bar knocking back drinks...I ain't doing this for the clad, either, it's about precious metals and relics, fresh air and friends. Fishing without the water...

Alone time. The search, the dig, the thrill... even if it's just bottle cap, again.

I like the anticipation of what I might find on the way to a hunting spot. I enjoy getting out of the house with a purpose on a beautiful day. The walking and kneeling, stooping and standing up are good exercise for my old bones. Finding cool stuff is just plain fun, not to mention digging in the dirt like a little kid!

Seriously, I like getting out in the fresh air and walking, and when I am Mding, it seems time and the miles just fly by. The exercise is good for my spare tire. Plus, the thrill of never knowing what you will dig up, and the excitement of finding something that may not be 'cool' too someone else, but too you it's the best!

Does your MD have a "female" discrimination mode on it??? Wow! Or are there metallic ladies where you come from??
My advice, got to go MDing with a puppy, the ladies will be drawn to you for sure!!!

I have a T shirt says The Voices told me to say it. Something along those lines. I haven't gotten through all the post, I am enjoying what all have said so far and a lot of it is other reasons I go out there hunting. Most of us read the post and want to get out there as soon as we can again and again. I been putting it off with the cold here in December and the fact I run the batteries down to 8 volts in my M6 and took them out for the season . Spring I will buy new ones, but I have a new set for the Eagle ll and I am pretty sure now the ones sent to me with the detector are good too. I need to get off it and look in the basement to find my multimeter to test the packs and the C cells to see the state of charge as pressing the lamp button don't work to tell me the state of charge .
M6 Mike

I want to add I meet a lot of people out there detecting interested in what I am doing. Some detect but haven't been lately and you can see from listening they would love to be out with you detecting . Here in Greenville my favorite was a guy who moved her from New Jersey. After talking with me and telling me his stories he left me and I dug my hole not finding the silver reading so deep, it disappeared on me and I know I did a job on cleaning the hole It went after I was below where it said it would be. He come back with a bowl of coins and a handful of rings to show me from his hunts in New Jersey from years ago. I hope to team up with him this spring if he can find the time one weekend. I don't even know his name but our talks left me feeling like I had a new buddy. Met a woman she had hunted a tot lot with a co worker with her Dad's detector she inherited . Storys with ehr too then maybe a month later she stopped me to ask how I had ben doing she was turning the corner on the street she lived on to go to the store or something I was on my way home from curb searching other streets. I also run into another from New Jersey and we met again while I was out another time he was just out walking he had a friend he had went with hunting but he didn't own a detector but was thinking about getting one.
I bet all of us or most have had experiences like mine.

Default Thanks for the post

I am glad so many have posted their reasons for Metal Detecting, and I will be checking this out from time to time. I enjoy hearing your reasons almost as much as the stories I get from the people I meet when out there detecting.
Happy Hunting Everyone

Default Newby reason why

Going into this detecting I am looking for Exercise and solitude as well as an interesting Hobby. I plan on finding things of Value both financial and historical. The fact that every time I hit a target and my knife goes into the ground I have a chance of finding just about anything, is pretty Cool. Once I learn this detector better I'm sure I will dig less scrap...

Default why do i MD

I love the outdoors, I use to always go bird hunting- bow hunting, but I screwed up my back at work and can’t really do much of anything, at least with md-ing I can walk nice and slow and wont look like a dork(that’s all I can do anyway)and when I fall no one will notice anyway ,and get a little exercise at 55 I would want to hang around a little longer if you know what I mean, and this way I can put together a coin or relic collection for the grand kids, I wanted to leave them with something after I’m gone, and this was all I can think of, just to dig one hole is a workout for me but the suspense of what might be in the dirt keeps me going ,I like it I just wish I can get out more often

I do it because now that I have a wife and a little one to take care of it's a much safer alternative than the hobbies I had a couple years back .... plus it's a little rush of excitement when you do find something nice

I've liked finding old things since I was a kid, loved prowling in granny's basement seeing all the junk from days gone by. Like some of the old coins and have always been good at finding money and other things just laying around. After fishing season came to an end I decided I would finally get into detecting like I had wanted to for ages. Now that the water is too cold for fish to bite I still have something I can do outdoors. I only hope I can find enough clad and jewelry to pay for the gear I've purchased and then I won't feel guilty buying myself another toy. Maybe it will even pay for the new fishing gear too. It also gives me added exercise. I've been lifting weights to lose weight, but I have a bad knee and find it hard to do cardio at gym since treadmills make knee hurt. I found walking about on grass didn't hurt my knee. I lost 5 lbs in first week of detecting. I walk around for hours and don't realize it till 3-4 hours have passed and my legs start getting really tired & achy.

For me its the thrill and excitement of what will I find next.

Every time I pull a relic from the ground I wonder about who owned it and the circumstances that caused it to end up in this spot. For the most part each relic is a mini mystery.

I guess my reason is hard to explain, but I wish the things we dig up could talk. How did a 100 year old coin end up there? How did a new coin end up in an old place? How long did they look for the ring they lost? Who made the bracelet out of coins from foreign countries? What in the heck is that?
I guess its the mystery of how it got there that intrigues me the most.
