Hi Again,
With all the great help here so far, I am looking at a White's DFX300. A lot of machine but will do the different hunting my wife and I are interested in. Next question for a newb, What are people using for shovels, picks, pin pointers and other gear. Search the web and there is hundreds of items. Lost on which ones would work for beach hunting. The supply company is trying to sell me hundreds of bucks in accessories and I am not sure I need all of that. Thanks to a great bunch of people here and I'm glad I found this site. Sean Currently in Wisconsin (Go Pack Go) but preparing to winter an the coast of TX and FL |

Good choice! (from a fellow DFX'er)
You're going to want a pinpointer. Harbor freight sells a cheap one which is much better than not having one is cost is an issue. But I will recommend (as will just about everyone on the forum) the Garrett Propointer. I know it's pricy - but the difference is night and day. For a hand digger, most people will tell you you NEED a lesche digger. Personally, I use a planter's buddy 7-in-1 true temper, available at most big box stores fro 10 bucks or so. I'm not knocking the lesche, it's a great tool, almost impossible to break. But I find you can use the true-temper pretty hard and still not break it, and it's much cheaper. If you're in really rocky country, you might want to spring for the lesche, though. You might not need a larger shovel, depending on where you're hunting. If you're at schools/playgrounds/private yards, please, leave the big guns at home. If you're in woods or fields, I use a regular small-sized garden spade. I was planning on using it until it broke, and that would justify buying one of the true "relic shovels", it just hasn't broken yet! Just remember, it's a shovel, not a pry-bar. If you want a "real" shovel, I hear good things about the raven digger, though I haven't used one. If you're out nugget hunting, a pick might be a necessary tool. But then, I might advise you to rethink your detector choice. Besides that, can't think of a good use for one. Other gear you might want (but totally not "necessary") - a nice tool belt witha nail pouch for finds, knee pads, coil upgrades, etc. If you're looking for a way to spend money, there are certainly ways. But I don't think most of that's needed for you at the moment. Good luck and happy hunting! __________________ |

Congrats on getting your new detector. The DFX is a lot of machine and you will need to take your time to learn it and not get discouraged. As far as equipment you will need a digger and I would recommend the Lesche because it will last you a long time. I have already broken the handle on one of the 7 in 1 True Tempers but the good thing about them is that they are warranted for life and they replaced it for free. You will need something to put your finds in. I personally like a nail apron because they are inexpensive and I can wash them. You can find them at a hardware store or you can get them from detector stores. Other than that the first and foremost purhase should be a pinpointer. Even a cheap one is better than not having one. I have just purchased an inline probe for my Prism but have used my inexpensive bounty hunter pinpointer for a long time and it served the purpose. As far as shovels, I have a Lesche ground shark and it is excellent. I can dig a plug about as clean as I can with the hand digger but I do not use it in manicured yards or any place it might cause a bad light on detecting like some parks and schools. I cant advise you on nuggett hunting and what you would need because I have never attempted it but I am sure if that is something you want to do that there will be more stuff you need. Hope this helped and have a great time hunting.
