Default Flying Eagle Cent!!

I met up with SilverStrike today to hit up a park that has been real good to me so far. I started out with a strong signal, at first sight I knew something was different about the coin, seemed a bit thick for a normal cent. I cleaned it a little and showed Silverstrike, he said it was a 1857 flying eagle cent, and are pretty rare to find, especially dug. After coming home and cleaning the coin, the Eagle still has some feather detail and appears to be in real good shape, to bad its not a 1856, now there would be some real money. I ended up finding some modern clad, another nice Gilt button, a sterling religious medallion, some steal buckles and a nice Peters head stamp. Silverstrike managed to pull 2 IH, one is a 1859, first year made! Im sure he will post what he found soon. I am thinking of sending in the Eagle cent, any thoughts from the forum?

That coin is gorgeous. I'd get it slabbed for sure if possible!

That sure is a great looking Flying Eagle. Not many of them dug in that good of a condition. The rest of the finds aren't bad either. Congratulations.

That FE is in awesome shape. You ask about getting slabbed...IMO I say no. Two reasons. One it is not a real key date coin. They made over 17 million of them. In its condition it might be EF20 if it wasnt dug. That is my second point. The color of the coin is not it's natural color. Since it was buried so long and it is 88% copper, it gets real dark. Any grading company will be able to tell it was dug. If you found a copper coin that was very rare, it is a different story. Like I think it was heavymetalnut who found the 1700's chain cent. That one I'd get slabbed. Now silver coins it is a different ball game since they rarely deteriorate like copper coins do in the ground.

I dream of find an Fe period, much less that great of condition. A truly awesome find. You were looking for opinions and I hope you're not offended by the above...

Nope I am not offended at all. I consider the opinion of people on here is better than anything I would get from the crooks at my local coin shops. Thanks, it is a great coin, hopefully ill find a 1856
