Default Lead? Pewter? or other??

Found this today while out at the relic park. Really heavy for its size. 31.8g!
Cut into the edge and its very shiny, I know pewter will be shiny if you cut into it,but what about lead? anyway to tell the difference? or what do you think?

"Cut into the edge and its very shiny, I know pewter will be shiny if you cut into it,but what about lead?"

lead will also be very shiny looking if you cut it like that. i think the item you have there is indeed lead. pewter has a very high tin content but sometimes has a small percentage of lead mixed in with it.
for some interesting reading on pewter and the different alloys used in making it go to <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pewter>.

i'm not sure what your item is (or was), but i'm leaning towards it being lead.

Lead is pretty soft, and will polish up nice and shiny, with just a paper towel. Oxidizes pretty quick too. Should leave a mark on paper. Pewter is harder, a little brittle sometimes, doesn't bend or deform as easy as lead. I cast with about a 50/50 mix of lead and tin, depends on what I'm casting. If it's large and not much fine detail, I use mostly lead (tin is expensive), small and fine detail, I use more tin in the mix. Flows in the mold better, details aren't polished away so easily.
