Default City operations manager, or Director of parks who should I listen too?

I got permission to hunt in parks in many cities, However I don't get this. Why did the city operations manager gave me permission, in these cities, and not the directors? The directors didn't give me permission at all.

Its all through email by the way!

When I called I spoke to the City Clerk she said "OK" then she transfered me to the city police department to ensure that no laws were being broken, and I have not had any problems.

Exactly! <<<Deleted by Admin>>> City workers, especially managers have a coveted job. One where they can sit on their hinder all day and not work. They are not going to put that on the line for anyone, hence all the nos!

If there is not a sign posted in a public place why would you assume you would get in trouble. Just use common sense. I think that Frisbee rule is a good rule of thumb. If you would feel comfortable playing Frisbee somewhere, why cant you detect? You would not take a Fisbee to the botanical gardens or the zoo, or the historical plantation where weddings are held, but you would play frisbee at the city park with a playground and picnic tables.

What do you think is going to happen to you if you detect a normal park in Atl? Are they going to arrest you and take your Bounty Hunter? No they would ask you to stop!! So you just stop and go somewhere else, but guess what? They will not stop you!

It is like you are obssessed with asking permission! Do you even go metal detecting? Have you hunted your yard yet? Have you hunted a clad loaded tot lot yet? Do those things! Stop asking permission. Maybe you should take up another hobby since you don't even metal detect <<<Deleted by Admin>>>!

If you are that worried about it join the MD club, the guys will tell you what is ok!

-----Added----- LOL! I can't believe that Rudy would remove a three letter abbreviation for covering your blank, leaving my post to look like I was cussing like a sailor, and leave tons of racy innuendos in other peoples posts over the years and obscene tokens!!

What you have to remember is that Mikey has been on here for months asking about asking permission to detect in public places, check his history. I wrote an actual scathing post in response, then read all of his posts, and toned it down. I think I said he should go into sales since he likes talking to city workers so much, and said he was obsessed with asking permission. He needs a mentor, detecting partner, and I would be more than happy to oblige if I were anywhere near him. I actually want to help him, and anytime he passes through here I will gladly hunt with him. Did I compare him to King Totsalot? I forget...

I'm not worried about nothing I just always felt better asking permission. I will cut down my permission asking on public lands, but I will still ask permission. Whenever some other member, or me asks a question on this forum about permission asking on public land You, and other people takes that as an insult. Come on we are all different, and we all have our ways of metal detecting! Its not wrong to ask.

Yes...I did the same as you.Tried to get permission the right way and most of the time nobody had a clue.I also got two different answers from the same question sent to me.I emailed delaware canal state park about MDing. One email said yes and then another said no.I then called and got a yes but I can only use an ice pick or screwdriver to remove my item.Sounds weird but its easier for them to just say no then to find out the right answer for you.

Hi Hellomikie theres nothing wrong with asking but usually city hall and people in higher places will say no even if they don't know the answer just so they cover there job . Most people just hunt the public places without asking and if there not suppose to be there someone soon comes and tells them they can't hunt there and ask you to leave . Sometimes there nice and sometimes like a few members here very rude . But you have to take it with a grain of salt and go on don't let it discourage you just go find a better place where you can hunt . Please don't judge all the members on here by the rudeness of a few most members are here to learn and share any knowledge they can and help others in any way they can , especially by encouraging the new people . You should do what ever makes you comfortable about getting permission , but you must be prepared for a lot of no's at city hall and from people in charge wanting to protect there jobs . Good luck and good hunting .

Harold

that was a bit harsh BUT these guys are just badgering you like a friend would...they are only trying to help you see that you are just closing doors for yourself and others....i hate to be told to leave, but the Frisbee rule sounds great to me...most of the time the person you are asking answers with a no simply because its safer than yes.

IT"S PUBLIC!!! YOU ARE ALLOWED TO BE THERE! LAWS SAY WHAT YOU CAN'T DO. NO LAW AGAINST = IT'S OK.

You have been told this over and over. If you keep asking permission from everyone and thier dog, you are going to get a "no".

So, CONGRATS! You just asked your way out of ever hunting in your town's parks (along with every other detectorist). Thanks.

Couldnt have said it better myself. I might like to add that if you are that worried about everything, maybe you should just sell your MD and then you wouldnt have all this stress in your life.

and please stop....................

I have hit the local parks here a few times, without asking permission. Never have I had a problem with the authorities. The local cops just smile and wave, but of course I went to High school with most of them..lols.

You got told "no". Therefore, there you can't detect there. It also means noone else can either because it could very soon become an ordinance. Congrats!

Between the city manager and the PARKS director, guess which one actually controls what is allowed to take place in a city PARK?
