Default First Woods Hunt

I have a friend out here that had great great grandparents living a mile or so away. We decided to go hunting the property a little bit. We went up the driveway that was already wooded over and had a few hits. Finally got up to the property and i thought there would be an old house sitting there, but it was nothing but stone foundations. I had quite a few hits but most of them were weird. I would get a signal on my tector and my pointer and nothing at all was in the ground. Im betting that something rusted away to nothing and it was just rusty ground. After checking all the old foundations we left. I found my first bullet casing to i believe a 30.06, a very large valve for a motor, a few pieces of brass. I did however find something very peculiar. As you can see in the picture its on the upper right. Its the grated thingie. It is really heavy, but very flexible. Its not rusted. when i hit it with a file it looks to be silver. I have no absolute idea what it could be to. I think the knife handle is also silver. If they are it will be my first silver find. I know most of it is trash, but i figured i would share. thanks for reading

The upper left - that looks like a bottom clutch cover for a engine bellhousing, maybe aluminum.

The upper right - looks like a old bolt

For the shell casing - measure the case if the bottom of the cartridge does not have any caliber markings. 30.06 is 62mm long

the "grating" in the middle (Under the valve) looks like part of the lead plates from a car battery.

From my experience on farmland, if you get a low signal (the number on my F2 usually from 5-15) and I can't find the object, chances are you detected a nail. I got a little "Mini Probe" with my MD kit that helps with finding the object when you are digging

I never even thought about a car battery plate. That just might be what that is due to how flexible it is. Is there any way to test if its lead other than a low melting point?

Lead will leave a dull pencil-like mark behind if rubbed on paper.

There are lead testing kits availible - check your hardware store.

If you saw a batch of woods what would you do ask permission to hunt the woods, or just go in the woods without permission? hellomikie92 General Hobby Discussion 30 09-05-2012 02:07 AM
