Default Yet another newbie seeking advice

Hi,

I am looking to buy a detector and can use some advice.

I plan to use this detector almost exclusively at the beach. In New Jersey to be more specific. I will probably get out 10 or 12 times a year and I am really not looking to do a lot more than walk down the beach in the morning and maybe find some change or other lost items. I don't want to go into the water with it, but I would like to use it near the water so I guess that means wet sand. I am looking for something that is useable but I am not trying to find things buried deep. To be honest, I would probably be to lazy to dig very deep.

Im totally new to this and I will have to see how my interest grows. I would rather upgrade to a better unit later and start off with something less expensive. I do however, want to avoid buying a piece of junk and not giving the hobby a chance.

So, you guys are the experts where do I go from here? I will certianly contact Tony once I am loaded with advice.

Thanks,

Jon

Based on what you want to do with it, I would suggest you stay with a VLF type detector, preferably one that is water proof (never know when a rogue wave will come), and one that has tracking ground balance rather than a preset ground balance. There is a huge difference in ground conductivity between the wet and dry sand.

Be prepared . Water detecting is not like land detecting and the way I'm starting to hear it you'll have to spend a bit to get something that will work everywhere. Detected a couple times on Atlantic City beaches and used a PI Pro with some pretty good results. Many are now saying that the VLF's are the way to go and that the Excalibur is the one to get if you want to be able to go everywhere. Give me a call and we can discuss it further.

Any thoughts on the Fisher 1236X2 as a do it all unit for my use?

The 1236x2 is a good all purpose detector on the lower price end. It is a bit of an under rated one also. Not sure how well it will work on the beaches where you are but they work well here in CT from my experiences.
