It was in the dirt that was taken out of the trench and so were all the Indians. The seated was where they filled in the trench in the center of the sidewalk. I imagine the dirt they filled the hole with had more goodies but they are now sitting 2 feet down and will stay hidden for another 50 years or so. Wish i could have been there to check the dirt as they put it back in.

It has to be the paste type. Gel "toothpaste" doesn't have the polishing powder in it.

Does this work on Indians also? I always use baking soda. Would toothpaste do a better job cleaning them?

Those IH's cleaned up pretty good considering. Those things just get eaten up under the sidewalks and in gravel, etc.

Great dime but I would just cry if I found a seated like that and couldn't get it to shine! Why metal detecting gods, why?!

Hot peroxide will work well on the IH's. Get a shot glass pour in peroxide and nuke it for 30 seconds. Put the coin in and let it fizz for 10-15 mins. When it comes out rinse with water and either use a toothbrush or a toothpick to get the rest of the crud off...
