At what point do you folks stop hunting?
I have trouble going two days without spending at least some time out there and I think I'd lose my mind if I had to go all season. Also, what tools should I have? I'm thinking a small pickaxe or something. __________________ |

Winter is my fav hunting time. I only stop if there is snow on the ground.
Down here, alot of times in January you can just wear a long sleeve shirt and go hunting! I do more hunting in winter than I do all summer, hence why I haven't posted many finds yet

That's good to know actually. I can just hear my wife telling me I'm insane going out when its really cold out but I also hear that sometimes targets can get a little closer to the surface. I don't want to miss anything.

I would rather bundle up and be able to take layers off than to hunt in 90% humidity where I have to change clothes 3 times during a hunt...N E DAYYYYYYYYYY

I usually hunt up until it starts to get cold. Then I start off again as soon as it begins to warm up again. I am thinking about hunting in the winter as well tho because I don't get out as much as I would like to.

There's no doubt, a few spots I want to hit in the Winter. Unless the ground is frozen, I'll be out hunting!

Here in MI we were able to hunt until the last week of Nov. I think we had a few days of thaw in late Jan. where we got out, but we really didn't get to hunt again until late in March. This forum is what gets me through those times when I can't get out myself. I'd really have withdrawls without all of the ones who CAN get out posting their stories and goodies. : ) I'm sure I'm not alone in this situation.

Winter gives us a chance down south to catch up with what you guys are finding up north. I guess if I knew I would have to stop detecting for months I would research like crazy, tumble clad, sort junk, recycle, and get gear in order for next season. I don't see how any type of outdoorsy person could handle being snowed in for months. Give me 100+ days of 100+ degrees any time! Good luck!

Well, I reckon the sand on our beaches will never freeze so I'm go so long as I can feel my fingers and toes.

The sand on the Jersey Beaches froze last year. But as long as a warm day or two pops it's head up I'll be there.

Well down here when the temps get down to a frigid 70 degrees, I really have to force myself to get out and hunt. I just hate that there is no humidity, I have to wear a short sleeve shirt and shorts, and I especially hate not sweating like a pig.
The winters are pretty tough here, don't know what I'll do! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

when the open grassy areas freeze up then i'll hit the woods since they are the last to freeze up. after that then its tumble my clad from the year and research new areas.

When living in Iowa I used to detect throughout the winter, even in the snow, as long as the ground wasn't frozen solid.
Now living in the south (some would argue with me, but to me, growing up in Iowa, Lexington KY is the south) the best part of it is that detecting season for me starts right about now and goes through around April. No one can seem to tolerate temperatures below around 50 here. That is my prime time... no people in the parks and no heat and humidity or bugs!!!

I hunt alot throughout the winter. When the snow gets too deep to turf-hunt, I hit a few local plowed gravel parking lots that get replenished with coins every year..I Leave the trowel at home and grab the large screwdriver to fish the coins out of the frozen gravel. Warm Rubber(neoprene} gloves and military knee pads are a must-have!...Works for me!...And sure beats sitting around waiting....

We are pretty much year round here in Houston but when it gets above 105, the hunts are shorter.
