Default Hooked up with Cupajo Today...

CJ... met me at one of my spots I like to hunt this morning... it was good seeing him again but the hunting conditions were terrible.. stiff NE wind held the water in not allowing us to hunt where I was finding the gold last week... it was so windy I had a heck of a time hearing whisper targets...

The brass and jewelry and half the coins were from today... the brass tube and rest of the coins were from Thursday... the teardrop earring is silver...

CJ brought two Diablo scoops for me to evaluate and both worked very well... CJ put screens in them both to catch the tiny objects.. at this beach (bullets) and they did well... the stainless Diablo cut right through the thick mud/clay mixture very easily... I then switched to the aluminum Diablo and actually preferred hunting with that one... its feather weight for a big scoop... the only thing that made me uneasy feeling was the flex in the fiberglass handled but I feel they are not a issue at all... all the holes in the scoops allowed me to shake the debris out very fast.. CJ said he could never hunt like I do (shaking) he prefers to use a sifter... I own one but rarely use mine... If I changed anything on the aluminum scoop it would be to add a stainless lip other than that they were perfect..

Good seeing you again CJ and thanks for lunch

That's a lot of bullets for one hunt! You almost had the same hunting conditions today as PI Joe!

I'm sure the temp was a little nicer down there... it was 50 when we got to the beach, the water was warmer (60's)

How is that CT pirate doing?

He's a little beat from the rough surf down here. He should be back up there soon with some new muscles to hunt better!

Default Early Hunt Payed Off In Bullets And Exercise!!

Hunting in your spot Craig is quite different from where I usually hunt.

Ist there was the one hour drive there and another back home (I usually drive five minutes to hunt.)

I usually recover a few bullets here, but never as many or of such variety as I found there.

Digging here is stoney with many large stones to deal with.

Digging there is sand layered over a clay-like base and is easy digging compared to what I run into locally. (The Diablo was empty except for a glob of the clay on the lip by the time I lifted it thigh high for dumping into the sifter I use.)

As for the Diablos flexing fiberglass handles, it takes a little getting used to, but I have learned to like how it feels when leaning all of my over two hundred pounds into it and the scoop responds by pulling free with no problem. (I don't get as tired out using these scoops as I have using heavier scoops in the past!)

As for the stainless lip addition Craig, I can see where it may be necessary one day as a retro-fit where the scoop is used in really harsh conditions, but the one you used today has seen about fifty hours of moving small boulders and is only scuffed a bit.

In normal sandy conditions it should last for a long time before showing much wear at all.

We'll have to get you to share a hunt with me here at Old Lyme's beaches as soon as the sand clears a bit.

I look forward to it,

CJ

Nice hunt Craig and CJ, Amazing all the goodies that you find...And glad you liked diablo, My favorite is the Aluminum also...Diablo's designer/builder has some changes from the feed back he has been getting from the 3 hunters that are using the diablo several times aweek. One that several have asked about are the small holes to catch the small treasure...updates to the software are being made for these to be added and the evolution of the Diablo continues toward a scoop that is designed by the hunters.

Nice that you two got to hunt together, hopefully the next time you do you'll both have some gold to show for it.

Default Looks Like We Have An Equal Number Of Bullets!!

But, then your pics include a prior hunt too.

Notice that two of the Double O buck-shot are jammed together and there is a smaller "BB" buckshot there too.

The larger round ball on the left may be a musket ball of 40 cal or so.

There is a .30 Cal rifle bullet there too, which I haven't found very often.

I hunt slow and am satisfied that if I am recovering lead and nickles, I can't be missing much gold!!

I found this Griffin stamped in a piece of lead that may be a producer's emblem too.

Until next time Friends,

CJ

Default Opened up the brass tube..

I thought it was a lipstick tube... I shook it and something was moving around inside so I took a pair of vice grips and was able to open it and out came a nasty liquid with wooden matches or whats left of them

One never knows what will happen when we allow curiosity to take over.

(Remember what it did to the cat!!!)

Thankfully it didn't blow up in your face!!

CJ
