Default Coil has whole but fixed?

OK, craigslist just had a garrett ace 250 for 130 bucks, but it says it has marks on bottom of coil, plus a discolored spot where there was a small hole in coil that was fixed. I am wondering if that is just cosmetic or a big problem. Thanks for all your input.

I like to buy detectors that have been used with coil covers at all times, and the hole might worry me some since it's not very easy to get a hole in a coil, something pretty major must have happened. It may have been plugged but inside the coil is basically coiled wire which may have been damaged. The price seems fair but I think I would pass on something with coil damage like that, unless you can find a cheap coil to replace it but in the end it would be just as cheap to buy new.

I'd say go give it a good air test. If it checks out, offer lower and see what he says.

Good luck.

Try to get it at a low a price as you can and find a nice used "sniper" coil for it, I hear the Ace excels using this coil. The coil with the hole in it could very well been repaired properly but if not water could get inside it & that's not good.

Default How would you test a repaired coil?

Any thoughts on how long it would have to be submerged to determine if it is still good? Best wishes, George (MN)

Tell the seller the coil is whipped and offer $50-$75.

I would not buy it. There could have easily been water damage and now it has dried out and works, but is not 100%. Used detecting stuff is always a risk, but to by stuff like that is not real smart in my opinion.
