Default First Old Copper and Buckle,Good Day

Today I went to a field that I have hit numerous times. I have found some decent coins and relics here. Didn't get alot of signals, but I did stumble across to nice prizes . I found a Matron Head 1819 large cent and a buckle. The Large cent rang up as a quarter . Really digging my new x1 prope. The LC is a little fried but I managed to pull a date and bust. I don't know if I should try to clean it or leave as is. This is my 1st copper of 2011. I hope everybody gets some hunts in this weekend. Good luck

Nice find. It'd be nice if you was to get a date off it but be careful not to damage it none more than it is.

I'd fall over if I found an 1819LC. Congratulations!

Wow Tim, that is just absolutely awesome my friend. Such a cool find. It does have some value in good condition but with all the crud its hard to tell. I would try a short hot peroxide bath. Then use a toothpick then soap and water. If it were me that is. I would just be too curious not to and peroxide does well with older coppers. It did with my IH's anyway. I hope to get an LC someday. Great job buddy!!!

It seems the condition of an individual coin dictates one among many cleaning options. Finding the correct option is something that takes experience. Maybe someone can suggest the right method just by looking at the pics. Good luck and nice digging!

Hey congrats on your LC. It looks a little toasty for much cleaning to be done. A gentle rinse and some petrolium jelly then wipe off all extra. About all you can do.
Good luck

Awesome job Tim. I'll bet it came in as a 12-46 right? How deep was she? I don't know if electrolysis can help since it's pretty worn. I would do it only for 5 minutes and see if any details emerges. Congrats.

Electrolysis might actaully take away some of the coin since it is so old. It will clean it up but it will remove patina at the same time. I think the hot peroxide is the way to go...

Congrats on the copper. I don't have alot of positive advice on cleaning, but peroxide, IMHO, is a big mistake. Been there, done that. Good luck.
