New guy here from Dover , DE. I am just getting started. I have yet to purchase my 1st detector. I am a divorced dad so I am not allowed to have money for toys! Makes deciding on a detector even more difficult! I plan on using the detector on the beach mostly. I kayak out to some remote areas as well so will probably pack it in my hatch for exploration. The Ace 250 seems to catch my eye as a decent detector for a beginner. Any thoughts gotta keep it around $150-200? I am not opposed to good used equipment.

Hello from Kansas and welcome to the forum.

The Ace 250 is a fantastic machine. Learn it and it will reward you aplenty. It is easy to learn and light. Once you begin to find cool stuff, upgrade the coil to a 9x12 or a 14'' and it will become a monster machine.

Good luck and HH!

I have fond memories of the going down to the race track in Dover every year as a child. We had family members involved with a car. Welcome from the nutmeg state and good luck with your MD purchase.

First, forget the saltwater until you can afford it. As a divorced Dad, I KNOW what it is like not to have ANY dough to waste. Be real, get the BEST detector you can for your current budget. Concentrate on the dry sand with a good VLF machine. I suggest the Tesoro Compadre ($170.00). That should leave you enough for a good sandscoop!

Saltwater detectors are expensive - $590.00 - $1,600.00 Good Luck!

Welcome to the forum from another Delawarean. I'm in Sussex Co., not far from the beach. Sorry for your currect situation, but it will get better. You've got the right attitude, and things will surely get better.

I have a couple of extra detectors that would work nicely for you. Drop me a line, if interested, and, and maybe we can work something out.

Good luck to you.

Thanks Bill! I am hoping to spend a lot of time combing the beach. Any suggestions on a good detector for sand in the 150-200 range? I am itching to get going but with the limited budget i want to get the best thing I can for our area.

JT,
There are several good choices for beach detectors in your price range. I have used an Ace 250 for a while, and it did pretty good on the dry. I got tired of the belltone, and smallish display, and don't especially like a (toy-looking) bright yellow detector (my opinion only), so I sold it.

I have a CZ-20 that I hunt in the water; my wife uses a Tesoro Cutlass II on the dry, which she likes for it's simplicity, and I bought her a Fisher F2. The F2 goes considerably deeper, has 4 tones for target ID, and also a numeric target ID, depth indicator, and pinpointer. I think it is great for dry to even damp sand detecting, but she likes the simplicity of her beep-dig machine, and doesn't use the F2.

I also recently traded my Fisher CoinStrike for a Teknetics Omega 8000, and I really like that one for dry, but again, she tried it once, and said it was too complex. Her year-old Tesoro Vaquero hasn't been used more than 2 or 3 times, and lives in a closet.

For your price range, I would part with the F2, and I am certain you would really like it. I would sell any of the others, as well, but that would be over your budget, and frankly, the F2 will do the job.

I'll send you a pm, if you want to call me to discuss.

Regards,
Bill
