Im heading to Mexico this winter and hoping to bring my MD. Im staying at one of those resorts for 5 days.
Im gonna call and ask if it legal to bring it across the border and to the resort. But before I call I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about metal detecting in Mexico. And taking my metal detector on a plane. And anything that would be smart to get to make it easier. And ANYTHING else! Thanks |

Put your MD in your checked baggage. Pad it well.
Watch your back BIG TIME, no matter where you are. Don't drink the water. ![]() ![]() Dusty __________________ |

I hope you have a great time! Is the resort near the beach? Maybe you can hunt there.

Bring your detector, pack it well in you checked bag...I travel back and forth with detectors no problem.
Where are you going? Form experience i can tell you: Cancun holds some nice goodies in the dry sand, all beaches in Mexico are public, meaning even if you're not staying at the Ritz you can detect up to where the beach chairs are pulled in to at night. Less garbage in cancun than other areas is a plus. Playa del carmen, sand is super soft, if water hunting you'll need a PI as goodies settle out of range quickly. Soft sand hold goodies too, but lots o pulltabs as it's a party town.... As far as other concerns, i moved here 5 years ago and love it and have never had any issues....but let's let the people who have never been here and would never come here chime in on how safe it is ![]() ![]()

Body armor might be a good idea, as well as a gps tracker,in case you go missing.

Don't let them get you down. The danger is highly over rated, depending upon where you go. We go to Puerto Vallarta every year or so and have not had any problems. I also stay in touch with the expats down there the rest of the year via online forums. The main thing to avoid is border towns and places like Cancun and Acapulco because the younger generation draw the drug trade.
At least in Puerto Vallarta, there is a lower murder rate than in my town of 60,000. Not bad for a town that sports a population of 1.5 million in the high season. I've never tried to metal detect down there so I have no advice in that area. __________________ |

This is getting off topic as far as the question, BUT:
Where i used to live was FAR more dangerous than where i live now. My house was broken in to twice in two years and my car was vandalized. When i went to put my house on the market there were about 8 shootings within a 5 block radius of my home within 2 months. Where was this heck on earth? Connecticut..... __________________ Last edited by zeemang; 07-24-2011 at 07:04 PM. |

I would dare to guess that the murder rate per capita is much higher in places like New York, Detroit, or LA than the Playa area. Cancun is a tourist area and that means money to the locals. The law enforcement in that area crack down pretty hard to keep the "money" happy and coming back. When I was at Playa Del Carmen there wasn't a single time I felt threatened. As for detecting, I had no issues with getting it through customs. I didn't find much stuff, but it was kind of neat to dig up peso's... I'd go back in a heartbeat. 2nd that on the water though, I did end up with authentic food poisoning from eating at an "authentic" mayan roadside dive....

Cancun, along with many other places in Mexico, are safe as long as you don't go looking for Cortez's treasure in the middle of no where.Main thing to remember if you want to stay safe is use common sense and stay near family at all times.
Also, you can bring your md to Mexico without a problem, along with your digging tool as long as you put it in checkin luggage. Last edited by Midknight; 07-25-2011 at 03:34 AM. Reason: more info |

Some places are safe, some are very very dangerous. Read up well on the area you plan to visit. The west coast on the pacific in guatamala, can be extremely dangerous, the cocaine trafficers/smugglers takes it all through that area on its way to the U.S.
Stay in the tourist spots, and you should be alright. __________________ |
