I'm heading to Wildwood NJ next week and am bringing my detector down. Does anyone know if I need a permit to hunt there? Are there any restrictions, like time?
Thanks McSterls |

I'm from Jersey originally, I moved down to Florida about two months ago. I was from Somers Point which was north of Wildwood. I was in the area down there everyday because of my job. If you're going to the beach bring a !!!! load of water. From the boardwalk to water it's almost a mile in some spots and the beach gets bigger every year because of all of the erosion.
Being from the area, I can suggest going a bit north. The islands of Stone Harbor and Avalon are pure money. The people that live there are all rich and the rental property alone runs in the thousands a week. Compared to the Wildwood area which honestly is pretty run down and full of $35 dollar a night motels. Of course the volume of people is greater in Wildwood but when you compare the sand area of the three beaches, Wildwood is a needle in a haystack. On the map below look at the Wildwood Beach then scroll north and look and the other two beaches. Wildwood Beach Google map http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Wildwo...01929&t=h&z=16 Also I don't know if anyone has been to the site mapping America. It compiles all of the data from the recent census data. On the top middle right click "View More Maps" then on the left it gives you other search options. Here is a link that compare the households that make more than $200,000 a year. Wildwood = 1% Stone Harbor + Avalon 19% http://projects.nytimes.com/census/2...g=-74.805&l=12 I hope this help and sorry for the overkill on such an easy question. I might add some of this to the research section. Ken (Mav) |

i was at stone harbor last week, just get outa there before 10am and no permit is needed ( 6 bucks) also if ya cross the bridge goin into stone harbor before 6 am its free (after 6am its 1.50 ) that hike from the wildwood boardwalk to the water is a killer

I don't know anything about NJ beaches but I can tell you from experience up here in the NE that the wealthy are smart enough not to wear the finery in the waters. The everyday Joe staying in beachfront hotels likes to show off with their gold thus loosing it in the waters.

I agree with Bobbie. I have hunted up and down the NJ coast, and always found much more at the areas where the average Joe and family crowd the beaches. Never found much at the 'ritzy area' beaches.
Obviously the more people, the more targets. Wildwood beaches are BIG. You may want to plan 2 attacks. Check the tides and at low tide, hunt the wet sand and water. If high tide is early in the morning, you may want to hunt the dry sand first before the people get there. Lots of junk in the dry sand though. That may be the place to just hunt for clad. Up the discrimination a bit and get all the shallow change. If you try to gold jewelry hunt in the dry sand, you may pull your hair out with all the foil and pull tabs there. Good luck and stay hydrated ! |

You can also try under the boards. The last time I was on the boardwalk you could walk under them. I know I've lost alot of stuff through the cracks in the boards.
