Default Father Son Detecting

My Father an I have been wanting to take up detecting for a while and we were wondering should we get:

http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...odsInSession=1

Or should we just get a single detector such as one of these:

http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...odsInSession=1
http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...odsInSession=1
http://www.amazon.com/Bounty-Hunter-...pr_product_top
http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...odsInSession=1

My father and I thank you.

How old are you? If you are over about 10 you probably don't want the youth model. Do you want two detectors or just one that you will take turns using? What kind of detecting do you plan on doing??... coins?...relics?...gold? Will you be hunting on dry land...in town?...the country?...the beach?...dry sand? wet sand?....salt water?...fresh water? These are questions you need to ask yourselves and find answers to.

As for what detector(s) you should buy, after you answer the above questions you need to talk to an experienced dealer and/or detectorist.
Read as many posts on these forums as you can. Ask questions of the people here. You will find them eager to help. Learn as much as you can before you spend your money on a detector...some day you will thank me for that bit of advice.
If you can't find a dealer to talk to, PM to me and I'll hook you up with mine. Good luck.

I am 16+ years old but unusually short for my age, only 54", that is why I was considering the junior model, for the shorter arm. We live in the SE US, we don't live near much country, but we know a few places, we also don't live in a majorly suburban area, and there are a lot of Public places like parks that do allow detecting. We mostly are looking for coins and jewelry, but can look for relics around old homesteads. Every so often we do go up to the Mountains and go to Charlestown and near the shore, so beach detecting is good for jewelry, There are some lakes nearby also. Hope this helps you help me. (that just sounds weird)

Tesoro compadre: $160.
Fisher f2: $200.
Ace250 : $215.
Bounty Hunter pioneer505: $199.
These are great starter units for a beginner.
Also you can try calling some of the forum sponsors. The forum has many sponsors who can help you out with all your question and some of them even give discounts to forum members. My favorite sponsor is Bart from BigBoys hobbies he is a independent dealer. He is great with people and quick service too.

That's a very good list. You got to spend close to $200 to get a decent new detector.

Bounty Hunter Tracker IV can be had for under $100.

I can tell you from experience it'll find darn near anything down to 8" (in sand)

and at least 6" in hard clay hehe

Well the thing is some of my detectors are hovering around that price range normally but are on sale because it is then end of the summer, and that is when "most" people would stop MDing, I am particuraly interested in finding out more about the American Hawks, I can't find much of any information on that brand. The reason it caught my eye was it was $69 when normally it is retail for 200. It has 4 1/2 stars also.

Experience is the best teacher. If you think that $69 will get you a new $200 detector. Go AHEAD. It will be a good lesson for you to learn.

That may be the best deal for under a $100 for a new detector. I'd still pay a little more to get a better new detector.

Better yet, I'd see if I could find me a good used Tesoro Compadre.

I asked very simply and nicely if anyone knew anything about that brand detector and if It was reliable, On amazon it said that specific detector retailed for 200, I don't know if that is true, the reason it naught my eye was because it was only $69 on sale. The reason the detectors on amazon are on sale is because it is the end of the summer and the summer is when "normal" people would go detecting, if you look almost all then detectors are on sale on amazon.
In case you can't find the detector here it is.

I have already looked at that. What I'm trying to tell you is that the $200 retail price is BS. http://www.google.com/search?q=ameri...w=1280&bih=601

You're going to get a lot better advice here at this site than you will get from a sales hype ad.

The part about clay is a BIG plus for me because the south east US is "Clay Country."

I think that it is probably similar to my BH Tracker 4. I think the list given by Hoze earlier in the thread is a good one.

Although I do like my Tracker 4, I am often left wanting better features and a stronger detector.

The advice given by members here comes with a lot of experience, if they didn't list a detector, it's probably for a good reason. (Your money can be better spent on one listed)

The only reason I asked about the Gold Digger is because It and the Tracker IV appear to be near identical feature wise and I was curious if there was a difference.

I think the coil is different and makes the gold digger able to detect gold nuggets with greater success.

But I could be wrong, I'm pretty new to all of this as well.

Okay, hope someone can shed some more light on the differences, if there are any.
