Hello All! I recently purchased a very old Whites Coinmaster 2 TRDX on fleabay. Wanted one since I was about 10. I know there are more advanced models but I just had to start with one like the ones in the magazines from when I was a kid, and the price was right.
I live in a house that is approximately 100 years old so I figured I had a good place to practice. Oddly, most of the coins I have found so far are 1950's through 2007... go figure! I was beginning to think I might be wasting my time until I came across an 1895 Indian head penny! Cool. Havent had one of those in my hind since I was a kid. That kept me going. I took a break for dinner, went back to the yard, and as soon as I lowered the coil to the ground a moved it about 3" to the left, I got a hit. I dug a nice round plug, peeled it back, and found a 14K gold ring. It is small enough to fit a child's finger but is fairly wide. I thought it felt rather heavy for its size. Anyway, that's enough to keep me going! One thing that I've noticed is that the vast majority of items I have found have been 1 to 3 inches under ground. I cant help but think I'm missing alot, especially since my house is 100+ years old and most of the items have been fairly modern. Any thoughts on this from anyone? Is my machine a bit lacking? I look forward to the hobby and reading this forum! Thanks All, Ike |

Welcome from Lancaster PA, Keep working that whites and listen to what she is telling you. Do you have headphones? You need them to hear the deeper stuff. Also keep overlaping your swings keeping it tight. You'll figure it out. HH

Welcome to the forum from a fellow Pennsylvanian!!! Congrats on your nice finds!! Are you running the machine with the sensitivity turned down? That would limit the amount of depth you are getting. Keep working your yard. Look forward to seeing what else you find.

Welcome from a fellow Chester County detectorist. PM me if you want a hunting buddy.
Anyway, sounds like you are doing fine so far, digging an IH and a gold ring as a newbie . The problem with detecting old sites is the iron trash, and that can limit your depth (specifically, how well does your machine work around the iron trash) . I don't know anything about your machine, so I can't answer that, but the secret to depth at your site is sneaking around the iron which is possibly masking deeper targets. Also, more modern coins were lost than old coins, simply because there are more modern coins, and more modern people to lose them. Sometimes it is simply a numbers game. Good luck. There are plenty of old coins in Chester County, and I hope you get your share. __________________ |

Thanks for the welcome! I'm covering my holes but my cat seems to think it's alot of fun to dig them back up.
Hey Qball, try to run the machine as high as I can but the slightest divot in the ground brings a false signal. I'm learning to "interpret" the sounds. Randy, I might need to go on a hunt with someone. I'll PM you sometime. You're right about the old iron. I know that just about every older property has a scrap metal pile behind it around here. That stuff tended to migrate over the years. I've found quite a bit of it. Man, I'm beat! |
