Default Newbie intro

Hi,
I've joined this forum mainly to get information regarding what detector to purchase. Or as you guys seem to say, "what to swing". LOL

Of course, now that I am here, I see that there is more than just "which should I get". I'm off to the threads to learn about the different types, techniques, styles and accessories etc....

I am grateful to see how active this is and look forward to way too much info and yet another thing to drive my wonderful wife crazy.

We are headed to the Alabama Gulf coast and I realized this is my chance to finally get a detector. I plan to use it mostly on the beach but we will see where this takes me. Water, woods, my backyard.... who knows. My price range is under $300.

By the way, I'm in Chicago.

There are several good detectors out there within that price range! And as soon as folks see your post, you will get enough recommendations to make your head swim!

Meanwhile, Welcome to the Forum from central Arkansas, land of totlots!

A hearty welcome ... from E. Tennessee.

While I'm at it, let me recommend that you check out Tesoro detectors
( www.tesoro.com ). They are made in America, have a lifetime warranty and, best of all, are always very highly recommended...as you will discover as you browse these forum posts.

You're going to be hard pressed to find a new machine <$300 that fits all your hunting areas. Might want to check out some good used machines, or maybe sweet talk your wife a little more!!

Welcome from the Battle of Jenkins Ferry! I have the same destination come this Sunday. Might can use you to do my digging.

Ever heard the saying about opinions and a....uh elbows? Get ready brother cause the brethren gonna speak on a topic like this!

In that price range are the Fisher F2, Garrett 320 and 250, Teknetics Alpha, Bounty Hunter-several models to choose from and many more. All better than they were 10 years ago.

Thanks everyone! What a warm welcome.
Like I suspected, this is more involved than just deciding how much I want spend....

Now I have to decide between VLF and PI. Or do I? Hmmmm two detectors?
Probably not to start. Most searching will be dry sand but I like the idea of going ankle deep too.

I assume that there is no way around the two types but are there any modular types where I can switch out coils? Is that even useful to do?

If you guys were not so quick to reply, I would not be so lazy and ask questions that I know have been answered time and time again. This really is your fault that I am doing it here.

Anyway, I am still reading the threads, I just get distracted easily when reading all the stories.

Thanks everyone for your time,
John
