Default Diving with an underwater detector?

I've read several posts about using a metal detector in the surf or shallow water, but can you dive with a metal detector?

Yes... some are deeper than others though... If I dove, I wouldn't be coming up because I don't swim

yep, i got scuba certified just for this purpose. I found out however its much easier just using a BCD, some lead, and a 20 minute spare air tank. Ya every 15 min I have to make it back to land to refill spare air but detecting underwater most people lose the goods swiming in waist deep and chest deep water. It's over kill in fresh water with all that gear, a detecor, draging a hand scoop. If your diving in the ocean or deep water dont try this as its a no no, but in the shallows its extreamly efficient and much more fun.......

More info than you asked but ya you can dive with them....

I just saw the video, he could add a spare air tank and only have to surface every 15

Yes. I used to scuba lakes with my 1280x.

It's not as productive as you might think, though. Lake swimming isn't really "swimming" at all; it's just people frolicking in the shallows near the edges. 99% of my targets have been found in waist-deep water and less, and these have all been accessible with my ads and my white's machines.

There is one notable exception to this, and it's where the scuba comes into play: Diving docks out in the middle of lakes. These are little hotbeds of activity, and can produce very nicely.

The water between the shore swimmers and the dock areas have targets here and there, but they're so sparse that it's barely worth hunting.

South jersey lakes are very shallow, and few exceed 20 ft. Docks usually lie in 10-15 ft of water. Many states have MUCH deeper lakes. I mention this because underwater detectors have "depth ratings", and you have to keep them in mind when buying/using one. The 1280x is rated to 250 ft, so it will go deeper than I'll ever go.

Sure,,, but make SURE that your detector was designed for this. WARNING ; Just like doing any extra activity while on Scuba,, you will probably consume more air,,, & forget to check your gages as often as you should ! BE CAREFUL !!

Hey seagirl, What kind of unit do you have? I have not used my JW FISHERS diving yet, but plan to. I have a few sites in mind.

Bottomscratcher - I haven't purchased one yet. I was trying to find out the best fit for my usage. I'm usually at Ft Adams or Ft Wetherill each weekend diving.

Thanks for responding to my posting! I have not purchased one and figured that the beach crowd would know the hardiest MDs. I definitely will be interested in using this in the water at the beaches, but also along the coastline. For recreational diving I usually stick to less than 70'-80' since I am often solo. This has coincidentally been the depth of all my really old bottle finds locally... I have over 750 dives in tech/rec/wreck/cave, so using a spare air or snorkeling is not what I had in mind. For longer dives, I can easily use my doubles and am adept at managing gas while task loaded.

I would like to bring it diving, but was wondering really how I would hear through my hood or if there are devices with just a visual display. I would freeze if I did not wear a hood so if you have any ideas, let me know! I'm interested in staying under $1500.

Seagirl, I don't know what your budget is, but the Aquapulse is one of the best diving machines out there. You frequently see professional treasure hunters(like Mel Fishers crew) using these.
