Hi all,
I've been lurking on these forums for quite some time and have read the tons of great advice many of you have given. One thing I find I'm having trouble with is that internal battle between wanting to hunt silver and jewelry versus pick up a relic or two. Thus my question. Is it better to stay focused on a particular hunt and only dig certain VDI ranges (say for silver and jewelry) and discriminate against all the lower readings so that I can be more productive? Or do I just plan to dig everything all the time? Where does the discernment come into play? Every time I hear the tones, even though I know it's probably junk, I fashion in my mind that it could be an old buckle or mineball. Thanks in advance for the advice. __________________ |

I think its all about whatever mood you are in. Why not hit it one day for relics, then come back another day and dig only coin signals. I do that from time to time just to change it up a bit.

Thanks! Guess it's just a matter of having enough patience. I've mapped out more than a dozen and a half sites to search and I'm anxious to get to all of them. So many opportunities, so little time.

Not too many relics in my town, but I did find an old horse shoe a few months ago. When I get out near the trails the Spanish Explorers took, I go for relics and coins. So far, only a couple of coins, but maybe someday......

I go based on location and time. Let's say I'm at a field behind an early 1800's house, and I can come back whenever I like. It beeps, I dig. Whatever I find there is going to be good. On the other hand, let's say I went door-knocking at a 1940's house and got the okay. Who knows if I'll ever be allowed back to that house again? And are 1940's relics really what I'm after? I'm going for the high tones, and occasional signal that screams NICKEL. I know there ought to be silver there, and I want it in the little time I have to spend. Those are sortof on the extremes, but just go with what feels right for you.

If I am hunting for relics...all metal and dig everything.
I f I am not relic hunting...just about everything from just below foil and up. If I am getting tired and near the end, I will turn up the disc all the way and shoot for those high tone coins and silver on the way back to the parking spot. The problem I have with disc is there are all kinds of cool things out there that will come in at readings that are not in that nickel or high tone coin range. I have dug some very nice stuff that came in as zinc. Expected a zincoln, got a nice surprise, instead. Dig it all. or at least most of it. Then you won't have that "I might have left behind something good", feeling. __________________ |

for me it all depends on the location and age of whats around me, i'm runnin most of time with no discrimination but only diggin target that ring up nickel and above. i'm not really huntin any battlefields or camps so i'm not really expecting any relics anyway. i guess it really comes down to what ya want and how curious you are

gtoast99 thats the exact same strategy I plan to use on a pre- 1920s house this weekend, its a one time hunt and then never again. High tones and screaming nickels will be the only signals I will be digging. Trying not to get my hopes up but i'm really wanting my first silver coin.

Relic hunting (especially Civil War) sometimes requires alot of research not to mention it gets real weedy in the summer. So during research I hunt for whatever. I dont discriminate against any sort of detecting. If Im in the woods getting skunked all day Ill leave and hit a tot-lot on the way home just to of just found something that day. I've ducked under many monkey bars.
Just dig everything including those pesky tabs.

well, if it is a relic and you do not want it, you can always try and sell it on eBay or similar and use the money for the next great machine!
