Using a sock. Or will it make it lose being sensitive?
I noticed small scratches on the coil after just little use and don't want to buy a coil cover. ![]() ![]() ![]() custom made

Spray some truck bed liner on it. It is like $5 a can.

I think id just buy a coil cover instead. Not too comfortable spraying something on the coil.

I don't know why it wouldn't work. I doubt that it will cut the sensitivity any more than a plastic coil cover would. Actually, I think it's a pretty cool idea.

i sprayed my coil w/bedliner and it worked and held up great, and no more taking the coil cover off to clean it which can be a real pain
i'd think that sock would get wet and come off and not to mention get alot of strange looks

I was also thinking...there just might be a market for your covers. Anything "custom made" is always in high demand.

All my coils have covers--some many years old--and as they were fitted from new
still look new underneath. You will NEVER get the same protection from old socks/shower caps etc etc. Sand/soil will still get in. __________________ |

I used duct tape, until I got SMART, and bought a coil cover. Never go the cheap route when it comes to equipment. A coil cover is a must have - period. Sock, duct tape, epoxy, truck bed liner - Something!

what a GREAT way to keep the flies away!
![]() on the serious side, it would collect every bit of dust and pollen, any dew or water from damp grass, and if you don't really mind all of that would add a slight amount of weight. and if you're "brushing" the ground enough to scratch the coil, then that sock will eventually wear through. i'm not saying that it won't work to help add some protection, but there's good and bad points to everything. i guess the best thing is to give it a try and see how it works out for you. and if it doesn't seem like it'll do the trick, then go with some of the other options listed above. personally, i use the bed-liner spray and find it works out great for me! Iv been using it so far and still digging metal a foot down.
Ill just replace its when it gets worn. And i was the one who sewed the sock after cutting it. Most important my coil is protected. Considering how the sock stretches out you couldn't even tell its a sock it looks like a piece of cloth material unless you actually study it. I also wasn't planning on picking up chicks while metal detecting nor do i care what they think if they see a sock on it. Whats the difference when the average one of us looks just as loopy detecting. Beats paying 19.99 + shipping for a coil cover on a machine that only costs $160. Maybe if it was the etrac or better id get a real coil cover. It does collect a little dirt but its not bad. I'm not sleeping with the thing in my bed for heavens sake. Ill hand wash it outback by the hose every so often in till its so worn ill make a new one out of scrap socks. My 2nd option i was thinking was pantyhose but i thought it would be to thin and i don't have access to them. |

To invest that much into a coil cover is a lot for me when I'm not even using a pin pointer id sooner invest in a HF pointer first. Can't get everything at once. |

Great idea...go into business selling them.
Call them a Loot Bootie, or Booty Bootie, or something.
