Wink Just bought a Bounty Hunter Lone Star... Thoughts and tips?

Hi there!

I am new to MDing and I bought a Bounty Hunter Lone Star. Does anyone have any tips on using this device? I'm pretty confused by the sensitivity knob and discrimination knob. Not to mention, the notch setting... I have read the manual a couple times and it only offers suggestions for different settings.

All tips and advice would be appreciated! I have been practicing with different metals to see how the md reacts, but while actually searching, I've been digging up a whole lot of nothing.

Also, how do you know if you live in a very mineralized territory? I live an hour north of NYC and there are mountains around me and so far I have been digging up a lot of stones. Could this be effecting my searches?

Thanks for your help! I'm hoping to put your advice to good use this weekend!

Hi i have a BH lone star also. It is good for tot lots and some newer parks. But for high mineralized soil you would probalby be better off with a ground balancing detector that is not automatic. But with the lone star disc mode is for coins and auto notch also but auto notch is much better for coinshooting.Which is all i use to do before i upgraded. If you got the small 4" coil that is good for tot lots. And the big one is for older parks to find deeper coins. The 4" coil does not go as deep but it notches most trash out.If you need more help with it i can help you.

Your Welcome. A lot of people dont like the brand bounty hunter, but i think that the lone star is a very good beginner detector. It is great for coinshooting. Also to pinpont once you have a target use a X pattern to tell exactly where the coin is so you dont have to dig a big plug. Oh and if you dont know Silver coins and rings or any silver jewelry usually ring in the quarter dime range. And pre 82 pennys are copper so they will read as silver on the lone star. And gold reads in the foil pulltab range.

I started MDing with the BH Lone Star and it is a good beginner machine. I normally ran in in Disc Mode with the sensitivity and discrimination nobs at around the 12 o'clock position. Do some air tests and adjust the discrimination nob so that you are picking up nickels so that way if there is gold you will find it. Because the Lone Star doesn't have a depth reading you can swing your coil over a target and start lifting up the coil until you don't pick it up anymore and this will give you an idea of how deep something is. I would also suggest getting a Garrett Pro-Pointer Pinpointer as it will help you find you object much faster.
