The beautiful girlfriend is interviewing for jobs and don't know where we will relocate but right now San Antonio is in the running.
Just want to know how is the dirt fishing down there? Do you need a pick to dig because of the dry conditions? What are the park rules for MDing? Do you have to wear cowboy hats and boots, or are baseball caps and tennis shoes accepted? She seems to hate snakes...you don't have any down there, do you? ![]() Not really sure if this is where we will end up, but I would like to be prepared if we do. Any of you Texans with some info will be appreciated. HH __________________ |

I was born in, and spent most of my almost 60 years in San Antonio.....beautiful city, but it got too big and too busy for me.
"Cowboy" types are not the majority anymore, only at Rodeo time in February. Any attire is accepted nowdays. Not too many snakes in the city limits anymore, as you move further out, things change. San Antonio isn't a super dry climate unless there is a drought. Morning mist and drizzle are common. The humidity is normally very high (yuck). The last I had heard was that San Antonio had made MDing in city parks illegal. You're going to find that land outside of the cities is all private. You MIGHT find some spots on the coast to hit, not sure what the laws are there these days. Dusty __________________ |

Thanks guys.
I am going to get a list of places she has interviews and try to push her in some kind of pro digging direction. Think I am going to be a house husband for awhile, but after cleaning and pre cooking dinner, what's a boy to do for the rest of the day? So what if we move to a great digging location but she gets paid $20,000 less a year than another job? Priorities are priorities...right? ![]() She had some interest from a job in Philadelphia. Hate the thought of moving back to the cold, love what they dig up there though. HH __________________ |

I guess we will go where the best job opportunity is...I sure hope to hell that it will turn out to be near the beaches somewhere in Florida! __________________ |

One good thing about San Antonio (Texas) is that there is no state income tax and the cost of living is fairly low (especially compared to Colorado). If you can tolerate the heat/humidity, high crime, and heavy traffic, it's not a bad place to live or work.....

Just telling it like it is. Great city, but has some things people (especially folks from the north) have to get used to....it's also one of the "fattest" cities in America, thanks to the super yummy tex-mex food (which I dearly miss!!!). I've lost 58 pounds since I left there!!!

I miss Texas dearly. I spent the 80s and early 90s in Austin and went to San Antonio many times. But sadly what I miss about Texas is the way it was, not the way it now is. When I lived there, everything was very laid back. Cost of living was far less then it is now ( Gas a dollar a gallon?? Yah right, that'll never happen.....) and southern hospitality was on constant display. Then the big tech boom happened and the Texas I loved so dearly was destroyed in about a 4 year period. Dirt roads became 6 lane toll roads, 2 lane roads became 8 lane highways. Local ranches and conservation lands became malls. Colls Home Depots and chain stores and restaurants put all the mom and pop stores out of bisnes. Ponds and swimming pools were filled in and parks closed to make room for more houses. The "Native Texans" all but left and the "I drive a Denali" crowd showed up in droves. The entire central Texas area went from being the Texas Hillcountry to being one massive example of ugly, faceless, cookie-cutter urban sprawl on overdrive.
And I think I will stop there 'cause I'm getting emotional over something I can't do anything about. ![]() On the other hand, There still certainly are a lot of nice people down there. The music scene is still thriving, the sports teams are entertaining, the food is totally outstanding, and the weather is AWESOME! Hunt Happy! Plug Martian __________________ |

You summed it up very well!!!..When I got married (first time), it was 1975 and Willie Nelson was on the educational channel from Austin, TX.......who could have guessed how popular he would become??? I miss San Antonio sometimes since I have a bunch of memories there, but that's the thing......they are just memories. Tomorrow I wake up to see a 14,400 foot snow covered mountain outside my front door. As someone said, "Today is a gift, that's why they call it the "present"." Hug your loved ones, they are here and then gone before you can tell them how much they meant to you. Dusty __________________ |

Much as the thought of 14,400 feet of snow makes me want to shoot myself, I totally agree with what you are saying. Totally.
I still miss Texas though........... Hunt Happy! Plug Martian __________________ |

I did a 6 month gig there in 1998 or so. I really enjoyed SA. I enjoyed walking around the missions and other touristy sorts of things.
Food - Well the only way to get a bad meal is to go to any sort of chain. I wasn't crazy about the Chinese buffets in SA, but they weren't really bad. However - I will have to nominate two places for outstanding food. Both are ....uh..... a little down scale. But I found the food absolutely wonderful. 1. Taqueria Guadalahara Jalisco Style Mexican Restaurant. On S. Roosevelt, across from travelers world RV park. I ate there 3 meals a day if possible. never had a meal that was less than excellent. Hand made Tortillas! An odd thing about this place is that wherever I travel, whenever I meet someone who lived in SA, I ask them if they ever went there. Most usually, they grin and their eyes glaze over and they say 'enchiladas'. 2. Blue Moon on Flores steet, out past the HEB headquarters in the OLD arsenal. They had a special one day - Pescado Mexicana - golfball sized hunks of Red Snapper in a light reddish sauce with onions and bell peppers. I think there were 6 or 7 hunks. It was around $3.50 if I remember. If HB's is still there, it was a great place for lunch. The people who own/manage it also run the food service at the horse track. HB's had a really good Rueben sandwich. You do have to keep your wits about you in SA. There are gangs and there are problems, but if you keep your eyes open, you should not have any problems. HH, John Morton For some reason, everyone's clothes shrink when the stay in SA. |

Indeed, there are parts of town (near east, near west) that you have to tip-toe thru if you don't fit the "profile" of the folks in the neighborhood.......
