I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with the Trident Viper underwater detector. I am looking for a dependable underwater unit to dive with. I was interested in the Vibratector 730 unit but it is described as mostly a pinpointer once you've found the general area with a larger sweeping type detector and being underwater you can really cloud your vision digging around.
The viper looks alot like so many Chinese knockoffs that are appearing on ebay these days cheap but not well built...thanks |

Dont buy a viper. Please don't do it. There is a reason why it cost 300 new. POS. Grab a used 1280 for that much. Or buy brand new machine...whites garret fisher or minelab. I use minelab excal II. Got bhid an 1280 for backup too. HH -Joe

I don't want to put down any detector mfg. But most of the time, You get what you pay for.
From the last sentence in your post, I would say that you already know the answer to your question. "Caveat emptor" Yes! The pinpointer is to locate your target, usually within the hole that you have dug. I'm not sure about using them underwater. __________________ |

I had a friend who made the mistake of buying one... first off the sound it makes will drive you insane... sounds like a mosiquitoe buzzing in your ear... then I dropped some clad on the wet sand for my friend to find and it didn't see them... VaMax once said it couldn't see a volkswagen under a wet rug... stay away from them...

Thanks for the feedback, once I spend the time and energy on getting to the extremely isolated site the last thing I need is to have my equipment go awol. I don't mind spending a few bucks on a nice unit but revamping the dive gear, boat etc. takes a bite out of the budget. The Pirhana is a nice looking unit I saw on ebay, if it will just stay below 4oo$ I might have a chance...

I dont know how much you want to spend but the old saying "you get what you pay for" applies here. If you dont know if you are going to like it (under water)pick up a cheap unit and give it a try. Thats what I did. I bought a American Hawk underwater detector just to try it out. Its a China unit but does everything it says it can. ( cant go below 35 ft though) and it was cheap. The water up here (rhode Island) is to darn cold to stay in even with the wet suit on so now I just use it for the low tides about waist deep. I never botherd to upgrade but the American Hawk has more than paid for itself with just the silver I've found with it. Good luck........... lobo

Save your money! A friend bought one after he was warned not to. He brought it over to my house wondering why he couldn't find anything with it. We tested on my heavy wedding band and it would not pick it up 2 inches from the coil. Kellyco took it back in exchange for an Excalibur.
He paid for the Excalibur the 4th day he owned it with finding a man's 2 ounce gold bracelet. This is a case of he got what he paid for. |
