Default Need ID on this item

Hi all,
I found this in the woods today I thought it was a damaged bullet in the casing at frist but there is no lip at the base and it has holes in it. Anyone care to take a guess?

I could be wrong that does look allot like rifling and the crimp marks but just not sure

Sorry, but I also don't think its a bullet.

It could be something electrical, as you'll see that kind of crimping on wires/connectors/etc.

I know without a doubt that it is a bullet...Ihave been digging them up for the past 5 years. The rifeling on the sides and the crimping is to keep it in the casing. Bet my next paycheck on it...

After all the thousands of rounds I've fired...it's definitely a rifle bullet. Not the casing, as you thought but the slug. Most hunting rounds are lead core with a copper jacket like that. In this case, upon expansion, part of the jacket peeled away exposing the core, slightly after it started expanding upon impact. The grooves are marks from the rifling grooves in the barrel.

i will also bet Kolby's paycheque on it being a bullet.
the rifling marks are there clear as day, the crimping around the circumference and the "holes" are there to help keep the lead intact with the outer core. i've seen many just like it.
oh, and for the other question from another poster, those metal strips are harmonica reeds. i dug another one of those just this afternoon!

Pete

ok guys I agree it does look like just the projectile part NOT the case but here is my problem look close at the top pic at the jacket to be specific it just looks way to thick to be a copper or steel jacketed round to me again I could be wrong but it just don't look right to me

the base part of those slugs can be quite thick, that's not unusual. often, from the crimped part down to the bottom there is very little lead, just the copper part and it's much thinker at the bottom than it is along the sides/tip of the bullet. it also appears that there's only about a 3rd to half of the actual jacket left there. i don't know what that would have been fired into, but it's sure not flattened out like a lot of them are and the crimp and those other little dimples did their job and helped hold the lead core in place, lol.

i'm not aware of any way of putting an age on them. neither of the ones i've found have any writing on them and oddly enough, the reeds were the only parts i found. maybe the rest was made from wood in the olden days? knowing the history of my house, i'm guessing mine are from approx 1910 to 1920, give or take 50 years. it's too bad things like that aren't stamped with a name and/or a date. i guess it gives us a little bit of "mystery" for our hobby.
