I would never put a coin in a tumbler. I have found that an ammonia soak overnight will remove a lot of crud with a minimum of scrubbing, but tumbling for a few hours might remove what little detail is left...

Most coins that come out of saltwater are only worth melt or face value... I tumble all my coins from the beach, I even tumble my silver jewelry

Default east coast beaches.

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum and had a big,big question for anyone that could help.

I'm trying to find a list of beaches on the eastern side of maine that are permissable to metal detect public beaches preferably and i'm also looking for info pertaining to any possible shipwrecks that may have fell near these beaches along the way. I'm putting together a guide and working on gathering info and it seems I am struggling with the state of maine for some reason.

Thanks for any help. hunterray2002

Are the people in your area rather large in stature? LOL. Kidding If your beach is also a family picnic area, then I would say it's normal.

Default Stainless shot?

I see a lot of people talking about using pebbles to tumble coins with in a lortone or other type of rock tumbler. I work with silver jewelry, and I use a tumbler to do some finishing, burnishing and cleaning work on pieces, but I always use mixed stainless steel shot and burnishing fluid. It's a little pricey to get the 2 lb of shot, but it lasts forever. I can have a completely black item (dipped in liver of sulfur), tumble it for a few hours and it comes out clean. Stainless shot doesn't damage the jewelry item either. Most of the items I create are in .999 fine silver, so they are softer than sterling.

Unfortunately KT was about halfway through reading all the articles on Norm's site when the family took it down...no longer available presently.

One thing KT would add, not from experience, but from much reading is to get hold of a tide charter for the local area and arrive at the beach 2 hours before low tide and hunt until 2 hours after low tide! Norm recommended this strategy also!

They should write an ebook of just links, this stuff is gold...it sure stops blindly beating around the bush to find things...we still rarely find great stuff but rare and never are the difference between enjoying the sport and selling your stuff before you gave it a chance

Thanks for the link .. you've saved me a lot of time.

Of course now I'll have to read the damned thing instead of just listening to the voices toss around ideas as they day-dream and eat pop corn ( I really hate that because they usually burn the stuff and the odor lingers up there for days).

I've done some sea glass hunting (without a detector, of course) so I kind of have a feel for the Maine coast, especially the Owls Head area. Assuming my first hunt will on the beach, is there anyone out there with any Maine-specific first stab ideas? (like... where can I find some car keys in the sand and drive home in a spiffy new sorts car?)

... or perhaps any other sort of first hunt leads in the area? I have a 4wd jeep and a license so I can go places not so close to home (Gray)
