Made it out for 2 hours today and hunted a plowed field today. It was wet and muddy but I knew there was buildings in this field including a town hall back in the old days. The rock foundations were strewn throughout the field and I found a lot of pottery and glass. The ground was saturated and a lot of nulling because of old metal in the ground still. I did manage to pull a wheat penny and the cut dime (I'm thinking dime, maybe not?) from within the constant nulling. I visited another spot down the road and found the IH, a wheat and a Lincoln penny from another rock foundation. Anyone have any idea why they use to cut the coins back then? Thanks for looking.

Well back in the day , day cutting coins was used because of a shortage of smaller value coins. Often instead of using an penny or a dime they would cut coins in half or fourths or 8ths depending on their needs. But as you could probably tell most people figured out that this wasn't the most accurate way to do transactions because my 1/8th piece maybe bigger than his and so on. This dates back to the colonial days though. who knows though maybe the person wasn't to wealthy or didn't have change so he cut it to pay the bills haha.
We dig up the history but dont always know the story. |

I wish I could tell you that your cut coin was a reale but it is not this time. What you have found is a quarter of a barber dime! Why is it cut? Who knows. It is 90% silver, that means at least it has some value, great find in my book!

Can you scan both sides of the cut dime?

That has rays on the back. That could be an eighth of a seated half. How thick is it?

You probably meant part of a seated quarter with rays on the reverse. I would agree that is what it is.

The coin is either a cut piece of an 1853 quarter or half dollar depending on thinkness. 1853 was the only year they had the rays on the back side of any silver coin and only on the half dollar and quarter. The rays are visible on the piece of the coin under the word states. Nice find!
