Default had about $45.00 canadian out of a spot once

they used to have a ice cream stand their. And had a big wooden porch on it.All the coins came out of porch area.I was on my hands and knees for hours.Shut the detector off finnaly and just used pinpointer.I hit that spot 3 more times and got more coins each time. It was nuts. And just recently dug a 158 pennies and a few dimes/quarters ect out of a camping area. All my bulk finds seem to be clad.Go figure(well their was the 35 adult coins in the same 10ft area)

Default Plausible? Lets confirm it.

I too find your theory plausible, but the only way to confirm this myth is to test it! Let's raid some coy ponds, and spread the dirt in a test bed. I figure it will take 20 or 30 coy ponds to really confirm this myth.

Chief thinks we might look at this a little closer

you stated "a defunct fast food restaurant to search the grass and flower beds" maybe the answer is here so i will go to a recently closed fast food drive through and look at the surounding landscape. Chief suspects that people have been dropping their small change during outside transactions like fast food workers do here in Chicago to keep the traffic moving in the drive through lane. Or perhaps years of people like me who toss their pennies on the ground when they collect the change from the service window because i don't want the pennies in the console because they go gammy against the plastics.

I have a closed Portillo's just down the block from me and they always had an outside cashier working cars in the drive through for years, sooooooo I will put this idea to the test and see how litered the flower beds are with coins

Sorry chief but I don't think your theory will hold water. Here's why: Now that I have finally cleaned out the place I can reveal the actual restuarant name. It was a Sonic. Very few folks ever get out at a Sonic Drive-In, they sit in their cars to eat! How they gonna drop coins from their cars, and have them all land in the same place!

Anywho, I have finished up with this site and the total is: 1396 coins from a 3 X 3 foot area! I dug it completely out and sifted 6 5-gallon buckets of gravel and sand to get the last 16 coins, all mems!

Pics are posted in another thread titled something like...Folks asked for pics from this site. Could not find it this morning to post this update in but found this, my original post on the site.

It was very interesting to read about that $45.00 Canadian haul! I know exactly what you felt like! Plumb worn out!

From the looks of where it was, after they leave the drive thru, they would just drop the coins they received from change out the window in that area. Good job on the find and the perseverance of getting them all.

and the coins were in gravel to 10 inches deep? Oh come on now! They would have had to toss them, not drop them cause they would have hit the concrete! Maybe they were skipping them on the sidewalk! LOL Just as logical!

Still like my theory best! But good to hear other folks opinions!

Can you tell if there were parking spots around that area? Does Sonic offer "car hop" service?? Could still be your pond theory though! How about fill being brought in at one time. That's part of the fun of this hobby...the speculation on how the coins we find get to where we find them!!

Cool Remember Laugh In.......

..........Vedddy INturesting!........... and it only makes sense. If you could see the blatant disrespect for the Lincoln cent by people these days they are everywhere on the ground. From outside the convinence stores to the sidewalks to the parks and people make fun of me for picking them up. Hey! Mr. Lincoln is on those coins! Regards, and nice work on a tough decision to hunt it out. Mykie

Grats on your find..very impressive. If your coins are just clad why not put 2Tbsp of "the Works" in a gallon jug with 3-4 cups of water and clean them with a quick 1 min shake.. they will come out all shiny and good enough for the bank. just make sure you rinse them after. Just my thoughts anyway.. anyway again WOW and congrats.

watching so little spot in the city I am really wonder, anyway thank you for the great story
personally I found before years - suspect in 2003 - 110 coins on the hill's top behind a village, all had be hidden in one hole and those all been 10 aluminium worthless hallers from communist era,
in the time when communists at the rule here I could bought for that sum 5 beers

Default someone above asked....

how did I decide to hunt that area...same way I always decide to hunt an area...I was hunting the entire landscaped area when I stumbled across this one spot! I later searched the rest of the area and got nothing for my effort!

A final comment about the zincolns...I ran all this coinage through the bank coin machine. It took all of the nickels and above coinage but 1 quarter that had a slight bend to it...but for the 6 + pounds of zincolns....it took only around 4 pounds and rejected the other 2 pounds. The bank told me that if the machine would not accept them then they considered them damaged coinage and would not take them. SO......I have the bag of those zincolns in the front seat of my truck and everytime I buy something at a drive though window..if it is 1.56 then they get 6 of them...! I am putting them back into circulation myself and I have yet to find anyone who rejected a single one of them, no matter how eaten up!

And finally, yes this is a typical Sonic, you drive in and there are paved parking spots around the building and no this site was not near those spots. It was not near the pickup window either, but well on the way as you drive out of the place....by the time most folks would have passed by here, they would have pocketed their change, rolled up their windows, and be looking for on coming traffic as they prepared to enter the main road.
