Default Hello from a newbie!

Hi there! I'm from Upstate NY, between Ithaca and Geneva in the Finger Lakes.

I have a 'cheap' detector, Radio Shack 63-3015 that I bought a couple years ago. It has LCD display, depth read out, pinpointing, and discrimination. I know it's not the best, and it's sat in a corner unused as I've not had the time. But now I have loads of time, except it's COLD outside.

I have a few questions:

1. Should it be fine for general detecting?

2. If I were to buy a new one later on, what inexpensive (i.e. under $300) model is good?

3. Should I dig everything up, despite what the discriminator says?

4. Any tips for a true newbie? I know about asking permission and filling plugs hehe...

Hello biddlewicket!

Welcome to the forum. You have asked the right questions in the right place! Lots of good folks around here.
1. Learn your detector and it should work great for you.
2. When its time to upgrade just ask TonyinCT. He can help you out.
3. I am still in dig everything mode. I feel it helps me learn what all the sounds and visual responsemean.
4. Last but not least, My big tip... HAVE FUN!

Jack

Hi biddlewicket, upstate New York you say? C'mon now - "I" am in upstate New York, you are still way south where it is alot warmer then where I am . I am in St. Lawrence County only 12 miles from "cooold" Canada. Just had to say that, when my grandparents where alive I would always say in the winter time - here we go again getting all that cold weather from Canada, they would get so mad and say that the cold weather isn't comming from Canada (they were both Canadians). I really do love Canada, just liked to tease them alittle. In the $300 range or alittle less you could check out the Garrett Ace 250 or the White's Prizm II or III all really good machines for the money. I have a Tesoro Cibola ($340) and I really like it alot. I would say any name brand in the $300 price range would do you well. Welcome to the best forum on the www. Steve.

Yeah, I think so... looks just like The Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II.

And I go to St. Lawrence County every summer (and Canada). Usually stay around Black Lake.

Yes, it's UPstate.

I started out with the 22000 from radio shack and was content with it until I got the metal detecting plague then it was on to bigger and better things like spending lots on all the little goodies and gadgets but for you just keep with what you have learn it like you would learn how to walk talk or even breath then go forward with somthing else. And thats just one rustynails oppion.
Were you aware of the rustynail foundation? Your first find that you post goes to this very good person um program it's all voluntary of course

Welcome. My first was a Radio Shack spin off of the BH LandStar and I had good luck with it. Just take your time to learn it and you'll have loads of fun.
